AC OPA rebate

Hi there,

Looking for your input on this post.

AC model that we checked last year qualified for $400 rebate but this year its $250 only.

Its the same model with 16SEER and 12EER rating. Does this mean that this unit is less efficient?

Thanks,

According to this site, the system must be a minimum 15 seer and 12.5 EER to get the $400. The model you quoted only has 12 EER so qualifies for $250.

    https://saveonenergy.ca/Consumer/Programs/HVAC-Rebates/Getting-Started.aspx

Don't know the history of the model that qualified last year, but if it is indeed identical equipment, it is possible it was re-tested or recalculated and did not deliver 12.5 EER.

Thanks for your response. Is it ok to post the make and model?

Yes, post as much as you know about the system.

Actual model is American Standard Silver XI 4TTB6024. Same model found in Trane which is same as AS and its noise level is 79db. Please let me know your thoughts.

    vijay,

Do you know the furnace model number and the coil number?

I tried looking this up in the AHRI directory just by the condenser and you get over 3000 hits/ 1100 active. It does appear, however, that some active combinations give you the minimum 15 SEER and 12.5 EER for the $400 rebate while other do not.

Maybe Tigerdunes will weigh in here. He usually recommends a step up from the Silver series. If you are concerned about noise, I definitely would not get this model condenser. I can hear one from 50 yards away in my neighborhood. Not good for townhouses.

Its Gibson SC Furnace. unable to lookup model number. Supply duct size 13". One AC company recommended to use 13SEER 2T unit to go with for our furnace as it'll be more efficient. Not sure whether its true. Your recommendation for AC unit for our home size is much appreciated. Its 1800 SQ.ft townhome with 9ft ceiling. Need lower noise AC as the unit will be installed outside of living room. Thanks..

13SEER Lennox XC13 was recommended by that company. Checked many and most recommended Lennox XC14.

How old is your furnace? Without knowing the model number, it is difficult to determine whether there would be any benefit in buying a higher SEER condenser/coil. Maybe that is what the one AC company is getting at. If your furnace has the older technology motor, 13 SEER may be the limit of what you will be able to achieve. Notice on the link I provided in the first post, you get a $250 rebate for having an ECM motor in your furnace. Did you receive that rebate?

The newer Lennox condensers are incredibly quiet from what I can observe in my neighborhood.

What is your electric rate? Maybe 13 SEER is all you really need, unless you are determined to get the power company rebate.

I had a lot of trouble getting information on the furnace, but I found this document:

    http://www.acorshvac.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/KG7SC_S_Gibson_92+Gas_Brochure.pdf

If you look on page 4, you'll notice that your furnace is equipped with a PSC motor. That is the older technology that I was referring to. I would say that 13 SEER or maybe 14 SEER would be the best you could do with this furnace.

That is probably what one of the contractors was trying to say. A higher SEER condenser would be like putting premium gas into a car that is designed to run on regular gas. I don't think you will be hurt too much by your high peak rate. With only a two ton system in a townhouse, even a 13 or 14 SEER system will not cost you much in Ontario.

Thanks a lot for your research and input on my request. This helps a lot in deciding the right unit. One last question.. Any AC recommendation to go with?

Why don't you get a few proposals from good companies in your area and post the model numbers.

    so far it's Lennox XC14, Goodman/Amana GSX16, Trane XR16, American Standard Silver 16 and Lennox XC13.
Even after mentioning 13" plenum, most recommended 16SEER 2Ton AC except that one contractor clearly explained on 13SEER. He recommended Lennox XC13.

See if the Trane dealer can give you a price on the XR13. There should be a significant price differential from the XR16 which I don't believe will give you the stated SEER with your existing furnace and may be overkill for Canada anyway.

I believe Trane XR13 is similar to American Standard Silver SI series which has higher noise level. Is Trane better than AS?

    Thank you..

Guess what.. Got the deal for Trane XR13 from the same contractor mentioned about 13SEER unit that goes well with our furnace. Deal done. Thanks a lot again for your help.
