Benefits of MDF
1. less prone to warping or bowing like solid wood,
2. paints smoother (no grain),
3. more environmentally friendly (made from recycled wood)
4. less expensive than solid wood

Rhoda brings up a good point about air quality which relates to formaldehyde used in the resin (glue) in MDF. Look for firms that offer a No added Urea Formaldehyde option.
