Fatamorgana - that was my first thought but if my memory serves aren't Comfrey roots black/dark brown?

I grabbed this pic from the internet, i don't have any in my yard in bloom right now, but this is pretty dead on.

Flora- I'm not familiar with comfrey root color. Many images in google images looked dark but not all of them. Individuals may be atypical so I offered it as a possibility. Looks like the OP made a positive ID however.

It is ladybells aka Adenophora . spreads by root and seeds ( about a million seeds per plant) . Absolute must to dead head if you dont want them everywhere . They spread quickly via root so you dont need the seeds too. Trust me I know I have it in my gardens .

Yep. I have been fighting the Adenophora I put in a flower bed for the past several years. It is a relentless thug!! A pox upon the nursery I bought it from that did not advise how aggressive it is!!
