Like any other neutral, there's a gray that will go with anything. By using the color throughout the house, you have a nice flow from room to room. And as those "pops of color" are usually inexpensive, like pillows, throws, lamps, compared to furniture, you can change moods to your heart's content, without changing the paint color. While the cost of paint is low, the time it takes to DIY and/or the expense of paying someone else makes it a task you don't want to do often. You've picked a beautiful color! Re the navy powder room. have you considered wall paper? A metallic/navy patterned wallpaper would look amazing, go with the gray, you can use it on the walls and ceiling, and can use an expensive paper, because it is a small space. What ever you do, it will look great!

Thanks everyone, great advice! Wall paper - never considered it, that might be cool in the powder room! I did paint the upstairs bedrooms a different gray, and I agree I think it'll be better for the nursery than the main gray. You're right - we don't live in the house yet! We are getting it all renovated before we move in, but I've obsessively gone there at every time of day and night to look at the paint lol. So far I really like it, but you're right once we live there I'll really know! No matter what, it'll be better than the old colors - burgundy foyer and living room open to a green kitchen, yellow dining with green ceiling, purple master suite, beige sunroom, dark blue and lime green bedrooms and a bathroom in two shades of pink :-O let's not forget outside cedar siding in pond scum green lol. Needless to say we've spent a small portion getting the entire house repainted!

LOL...Dear God !! Kristin, those colors are like the ones WE had in this house...LOL...I know everyone has differing tastes, but this is the first time I had encountered a home whose previous owners had NO taste !!! LOL....( well, I'm sure THEY thought they did ! )....to each his own, obviously....we have a mid-century ranch that has been extensively ( and expensively ! ) renovated by previous owners......however they left the PINK tub ( with sliding glass doors so color of tub was obvious ), toilet, and 2 sinks in the bathroom.....o-kay....but then compounded the problem by painting the walls a horrid DARK mauve color...OMG....it was a killer !! LOL....once I put the greige color on the walls, it "neutralized" the pink fixtures, I removed the glass doors on the tub and hung a shower curtain in MUTED tones of soft sage green, soft mauve, and soft pink, and all of a sudden those fixtures don't even seem like they're there!! Gotta love the power of the RIGHT paint color !! LOL....

hahaha now I'm going to run over to the house to make sure the pink bathroom doesn't have a pink tub I didn't notice :-D

I love the color and house design. I have almost the same entry with oak railing and light wood floors. I chose Kelly More Gettysburg Gray. Is that close to Amazing Grey.

Here you go, Kristin...LOL...obviously the first 2 are the "before" and last 2 are the "after"...pictures are quite deceiving as to color, though...tub, sinks, and toilet are more of a soft rose like tub in first picture.....not a "dark, deep" color at all....

MY problem is the overload of "Golden Oak" wood EVERYWHERE in this house.....they must have given the previous owners one heck of a discount on it for buying so much....LOL...and I HATE it !!! I prefer dark wood anyday ! So now I'm trying to figure out if I should paint at least all the trim white and then stain the rest with a dark tone....problem is vanity and over-the-toilet cabinet are laminate with real wood doors, so won't stain properly, and they'd look stupid done in white.....(( sigh ))....at least it's a room we don't spend too much time in...LOL

Yes, definitely looks great. With a little pop of color here and there would look fab! I have grey floors and blinds in the kitchen, but am adding a bit of red in my kitchen accessories to insert some color. I plan on getting a picture or painting of some sort with brighter colors to make it brighter and I get plenty of natural light. Very nice!

My daughter used Restoration product from Home Depot or Lowe's. It was made by Rustoleum and they went from Golden Oak everywhere to dark ebony cabinets all over the place. Looks great and was a nice easy product to use. And a lot of color choices.

I do want to do the trim woodwork a crisp white, which will help, but with the cabinets, AND a double set of bi-fold doors ( to the right of the tub ) behind which is my laundry area, that small room is on "oak overload"...LOL...and besides, the "Golden Oak" is a WARM color, and bathroom floors and tiles, etc. are COOL colors....in MY mind, my OCD brain goes nuts whenever I enter that room!!

One of my favorite greys from Sherwin Williams, my other is Light French Grey. Great choice, not to warm of a grey but not to cool! It goes with a lot of different wood tones, so I believe you should be good. Putting a warm colored wood up to a grey wall brings out the warm tones, since it contrasts with the cool tones. Lovely home. I put a similar grey in my townhome and have wood floors/cabinets which are a similar colour. I have lots of white trim and doors as well. Lightening was a bit of a problem after the paint so I put up new fixtures and some track lighting. I also changed the matts on my hanging prints so that they were whiter. My living room furniture is a gray leather button sofa, teal antique Victorian chairs, and teal and white striped occasional chairs. For Christmas it all looks wonderful with gold Christmas decorations. Go for it!

advise form a painter

When you say the furniture lady do you mean a designer or a furniture salesperson from a specific store? Be careful to choose someone with your best interests at heart, not a sales person from a furniture chain. Ethan Allen comes to mind, overpriced mediocre furniture. A designer will have many resources to source from the trade, much better quality, choices and pricing.

Also, just a question, why are you painting first before furniture, carpets, draperies, fabrics are chosen? I usually suggest to choose your large investment pieces first, such as the area rugs and sofas, then choose paint color. There a millions of paint colors, not as many beautiful fabric choices. That is why it is called design. Make a plan then slowly go forward. Please don't buy all your furniture at once and no matching sets or large oversized leather sofas, sectionals or chair and ottoman!

I cannot imagine every room of my house being the exact same color...not even white. JMO.

macgrill....to give you a different perspective, I cannot imagine every room of my house being a DIFFERENT color...LOL...I live in New England...we experience 4 very different seasons...and along with those seasons come differing emotions / feelings....in Winter, we want to snuggle in, and feel cozy during our long, harsh Winters, Spring signals many different colors of flowers as they awaken from their long nap, Summer is finally hot ( sort of...LOL ) and we want things bright and airy and light, and Fall is for those wonderful reds, golds, and colors of the changing leaves on the trees.............that said, it's GREAT to have a neutral backdrop on the walls, and not be "locked in" to a "same old, same old" color scheme in any of our rooms.....we can change the look with the seasons, just by adding color in our accessories....fairly cheap, wonderfully creative way to keep things fresh and changing as we progress thru the year !! There is a reason every decorator knows that "less is more"....a few pops of color will do more for a room's ambiance than 4 walls painted in a color, every time.....hope this helps you see the "other side of the coin"....

Hi Ravensmom, you are going to laugh, but I was born and raised in Boston! In fact, I didn't leave NE until the mid-80's so I grew up with the seasons. I now live in Idaho where we also have 4 very distinct seasons, but we have nowhere near as much snow as Boston, LOL! . My family home was 75 years old and the first three homes my husband and I bought were over 100 years old, and not one of them was the same color in every room; certainly not grey! In fact I never saw houses with the rooms painted all the same color until I loved to San Francisco. I was blown away by the blandness. I grew up in a house with hand printed Schumacher wallpaper, damask draperies, four poster beds with crocheted canopies and birds eye maple furniture from the Mayflower Furniture Company...very typical Boston Lace Curtain Irish. My Mother had excellent taste and bought investment pieces back then, which I now own so my design philosophy is quite different than yours. It takes me at least 6 months to decorate a room in my home, carefully selecting paint colors, flooring, lighting, window treatments, furniture, etc. Since I have some of those special pieces of art and furniture from my family I try to carefully incorporate them into my design plans...they aren't particularly valuable, but to me, they are priceless. Once I complete a room, I am so happy with my choices, I know that I can live with them for a very long time. I don't buy inexpensive things and will save up until I can afford what I want. That's the one thing my Mom taught me. For that reason, I can't afford to change things each season, not even my throw pillows. I've never once regretted any design choices I've ever made but I've sure as hell had a lot of sleepless nights making them, that's for sure! I'm also 68, so I'll be dead before I'll get bored of my design choices :-)

I love the paint color!!! Would love it for my own home!

Two coats of paint are now on all the walls in the house - SW duration in matte everywhere except the bathrooms (we used satin there). The house looks so much bigger and brighter. I can see adding colors here and there as we live in the house, but I don't miss the hot mess of colors that was in there one bit lol.

I realize it's probably smarter to pick out furniture first, but the place we will order from takes around 8 weeks to deliver each piece. I'm pregnant with our first baby and we are currently renting, so we wanted to repaint the ENTIRE house (inside and out) before moving in, along with redoing the entire kitchen, refinishing the hardwood floors and installing all new carpet. I'm due in October and really want to be done with everything before baby is here. I don't mind taking my time to find the right furniture pieces, but all the other construction type stuff just has to be completed.

I understand this may not be the "right" way to do it, but it's what works for us at this point in our lives. Hoping for the best!!

It IS duration AND amazing gray lol. The name of the color is "amazing gray" and the type of paint is duration by Sherwin Williams. SW has many types of paint, including emerald, duration, super paint, and on and on and on. You can choose which type of paint you want and they can make it in any color you want.

I agree it looks like a warm gray to me too, but it's listed under the cool grays on the SW website :)

No problem! The reason I stated we used the duration line from SW is because from what I've read, the duration in matte is a little glossier than other mattes. We were initially going to do satin throughout the house, but after I read that, we went with the matte. I'm very happy with it. It's not soooo flat but it's also not super shiny or glossy :)

regarding whole house being the same color - that's a new trend, and not a bad one, depending on the style of the house, and your style and interests. I never thought I would do that, or like it, but in my new build, I pretty much painted the whole interior the same color, and I like it.

I think if you start with an open or empty slate, a one-color option is less jarring than you might think (again, depending on the style of the house). But the color has to work with the lighting - ambient and added - to work. One color could be difficult, could be perfect. Hard to say, but to each his own.

It looks beautiful! We just built a house a year ago, and I used the same color (gray) in most of the house. I went with darker gray in my powder room and dining room, and a grayish blue in the master. I love the idea of navy in the powder--think it'd be awesome with the Amazing Gray. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! The entire house is now done! They painted the base boards tonight. The powder room is a deep blue/navyish color that turned out perfect - it's SW loyal blue. A few touch-ups here and there tomorrow and we are moving on to the next phase of the remodel!

Moved in now but still not quite done! Kitchen is 90% finished. Some furniture is ordered and arriving in a few weeks. I'll definitely be posting pics as we wrap things up.

I love the gray! Because of its neutrality, it leaves room to add splashes of accent colors throughout the rest of the house which makes it fun and versatile!

Kristen, I LOVE the color with your wood! After I saw your pics I went on a houzz hunt for amazing gray pics and I can't believe the variations, it seems to be a chameleon type color. I'm going to see if it will work in our new build. By the way, I'm no professional but I can completely understand wanting to get all of the paint done then worry about furniture and accessories. It will all look beautiful, congratulations on your baby :).

I bought about 8 samples of gray colors from SW and it was totally worth it. Hope it works out for you, I love it and everyone who has come in to work on the house has commented on it as well!
