Could you take a flat ribbon and use spray adhesive (or maybe there are some that are self stick) and put it onto the screen? Seems that would be flexible enough to roll up with the screen.

it would be tricky, as anything with a thickness more than 0 will make a bunch up on the screen as it retracts.

how about attaching the end of a ribbon, or something, to the handle and the other end to the other end of the screen frame, when the screen pulls out the ribbon will be taut and a visible notice, and when the screen is closed it will just hang down. you could attach a small sign to the middle of the ribbon that would be both weight (to keep the ribbon from getting entangled) and increase visibility.

Thank you all for these ideas. Not sure which I will try but it may be a short term fix followed by a more creative one (gotta have form with my function!)

Can you put a colored tape when you have a people over? If it hinders retraction, you can put a new tape each time.

Cut back on the alcohol consumption and maybe better lighting.

Can you tell me who makes the brand that you have and love? I am looking into retractable screens and there are mixed reviews for those that I have found. Thank you.

I have seen small flat metal decals that are positioned at eye level and at dog level to prevent walking thru. The decals can be a palm tree, bird etc. and they were placed on retractable door.

I love my retractable screen door (over French doors). My screens have darker stripes that you can see, but they meet in the middle with a white frame, so they’re pretty easy to spot. I would just put up colorful duct tape when people are over.

I know this thread is a few years old but I’ll add in a few more ideas for DIY screen door / flyscreen safety decals, just in case anyone else stumbles across this thread while googling!

After a few accidents walking into our new door we needed an easy DIY solution that could also be removed later without permanent marks or damage, and the best ideas we came up with were these:

• Velcro dots - press the hook & loop sides together hard with the mesh in between. If you only have the self-adhesive type of dots, either leave the backing paper on them so they’re not sticky, or you can dip the sticky side in glitter or cover it with silver foil or glow-in-the-dark paint for extra visibility.

• Large flat flexible sheet magnets, one on each side of the mesh. Magnetic business cards work well.

• A small powerful earth magnet on one side and a flat metal accessory on the other, like old jewellery pendants/earrings, medals/coins, buttons, washers etc.

• Name/party badges (the type with a safety pin backing or a magnetic clasp).

• A self-retractable business lanyard with a silver wire or brightly coloured string (this one is quite similar to the ribbon idea that Ninigret mentioned above)! Attach the belt clip to the centre fixed door frame, and the end of the lanyard string to the handle edge of the screen door, so the bright lanyard string automatically extends across the flyscreen as the door opens and retracts again as it closes.

• Bright/silver string or wool, threaded on a darning needle and “sewn” in a line or pattern across the mesh.

I just spray painted a stripe across the screen.

I cut small identically sized pieces of colored duct tape and applied to each side of the door. Then opening the door slightly I rubbed them together applying pressure to each side. I’m now thinking of applying additional strips lower on the door for smaller kids.

I know it's an old thread, but I'd just use chalk marker, so could wipe it off if you want to later.
