Redbud tree dead but not dead

Hello tree experts.

I have a Forest Pansy Redbud. It was a 7-8 ft tall, tree form and beautiful when planted two years ago. This spring, only one branch is alive and well (bud, flowers, leaves and all), but all other branches (I think there are about 20 branches) are dead. Brown when scratched, no flex, dead. The main trunk from the ground seems alive and sends its energy only to that one branch. The one branch that is alive is the tallest, in the middle. If I trim all branches that are dead, the tree will basically become a giant chopstick. There are buds on that main trunk near ground, and one sucker from the ground.

So I'm at a loss what to do with this tree. Do I leave it? Do I get rid of it? It is on my front yard so it cannot be unnoticed. Would the buds on the trunk will become branches eventually? If I trim it to a giant stick figure (*sigh) and wait, would the tree eventually become a multi-stemmed one? How long does it take? Should I just cut my loss here? Thanks! I'm in zone 6 but last winter was brutal.
