How did you light underneath the treads of the stairs, and where did you find them?

They look like 6x6 Talavera style tiles that have been chopped off along the top, to me. I have noticed the lighting like this on another photo, its a great idea, especially outside. I think that there must be a niche to put an encased line of lighting carved behind the lip of the wood, it's similar to under cabinet strip lighting in a kitchen. The wiring must be pretty extensive if it's a high stairway, but worth it. I would imagine the grout would have to be done before the lighting.
