Front Door/Sidelight Paint

Hey guys, simple question. We have grey siding and black shutters/front door with a lot of white trim. This seems to be very traditional which is not our taste. We love rustic/industrial stuff like RH.

So, we plan to at least paint the front door. We love all things grey and we wanted to paint the front door a darker charcoal grey instead of just plain black. Maybe BM wrought iron or something a tad lighter so people can see it's actually not black. My question is, based on the photo below, would it look odd if I painted the sidelights to match the door? I'd like to paint all the white around the door. I also attached a couple examples. My house is the first pic with the landscaping.

Thanks in advance!

    Any Thoughts?

I think if you match the shutters to the door it will look great!

Thanks! Is it a must to match the door to the shutters? Not sure how touch it is to paint new vinyl shutters...

What are your thought on painting the sidelights to match the door?

What about adding two large potted succulent gardens in big dark gray planters in front of each side window at the front door? It would add another shade of gray to the landscape and more depth to the landscape. I've seen the planters sold at Restoration Hardware and Design Within Reach.

Planters are in the plans. I am making my own concrete square planters.

As far as matching the shutters, i am fine with that. But i do want to get rid of the black. Thats our goal in this.

The shutters may be a bit hard to paint compared to just the door and sidelights. Our thought was to just paint the door and sidelights all one charcoal color and see how that looked. I wasnt sure the sidelights would look good painted to match the door but i do think so now.

I actually like your house the way it is. If you go with a darker charcoal for the trim, such as BM Wrought Iron, I would change the siding color to a lighter gray for more contrast. In this case, keep shutters and door the same color.

Love the white sidelights...I wouldn't change that.

Some Houzzers might suggest painting the garage door the same color as the siding in order to make it less of a focal point. Maybe keep the trim around it white.

The siding isn't actually as dark as it looks. It's a lighter grey, see photo.

The pic was taken in the early morning but here's one in the sun...(and without landscaping)

I REALLY want to paint the garage door to match. It's a brand new vinyl door though. Wasn't sure if anyone had experience painting a new vinyl door? Or if I should even try.

Wow...that does look totally different! I'm not sure about painting the vinyl, but some of the pros here should know. It's a great house!

Ahhh...grover! Those pics reinforce my opinion...white sidelights. The door becomes somewhat "lost" in the 3rd and 6th pics. It needs some white around it.

Thanks Groveraxle! That darker grey looks awesome in the all grey door/trim 3rd down! Could you do a pic with that same color and make the shutters and garage door the same color? THanks!

chloebud, its funny how opinions can vary. I like #2 or #3, tough to say

More i look at it, the more i am set on #2 down. There still needs to be some white because of the white trim around the foyer window. #2 down plus a grey garage door and grey shutters would look pretty nice i am thinking!

conny, I think grover's rendition of #2 looks nice since there's still some white to frame the door, and it flows better with the entire look.

I love what Groveraxle did with #2. ofcourse my fave is #3! Groveraxle, how do you do that?

Thanks a ton! Decisions Decisions. Have to go pick out a dark grey tomorrow. Thinking Benjamin Moore but not sure what color yet.

You should paint the front door a deep dark forest green or deep dark, oxblood burgundy. Why go black/grey boring?
We actually wanted to do a burgundy like farrow and ball mahogany but thought it would make it busy. Would it look weird to do the door and sidelights in the burgundy and the shutters/garage door dark grey?

I'd keep the scheme as is and just paint the door the dark red. Classic, classy, adds some zip.
