We are putting our house on the market in order to downsize. Our problem concerns family room walls that were originally paneled since house was built in 1975. Years ago we painted the lower portion of the paneling and added a chair rail. We also placed sizing over paneling on upper portion and wallpapered over it. In order to give room an updated look we hired a professional painter/wallpaper hanger who was highly recommended. One of the solutions he offered which was not inexpensive was to remove wallpaper and if sizing was in good shape to paint over it. We went with this solution much to our disappointment. Walls looked fine until paint dried. Now the walls have a "striped " look since the grooves, indentations and bumps of the panels show thru. We are "seniors" on a budget so hiring him back is not an option. Any inexpensive solutions? paintable wallpaper? sponge paper walls? peel and stick panels? Any ideas that we could do ourselves would be so helpful.
