We've added an addition to the back of the house and need help with the new floor. The front living and dining rooms (pictured) have narrow plank wood (not sure of species) running lengthwise with the house. We think the kitchen was added later, because as you can see, the wood starts to run the other way and it's slightly different in color.

Beyond the kitchen, we built a family room addition. We would prefer not to replace all of the floors on the first floor (we will refinish though), but we also don't want three types of wood so we are exploring what it will cost to replace the kitchen floor at the same time we add the new family room floor.

Should we really try to match the existing floor in the living and dining rooms? We prefer wider planks and a darker color, but would a transition to wider planks look really weird? Is there a way to make the transition look nice? And which direction - running lengthwise with the house or opposite? Would love to see pictures of a nice transition between two types of wood. Your thoughts are appreciated!
