I agree, like the patterned one the best, noticed there is a plain one under dining room table, so breaks spaces up.

Really like the 2nd rug! Would you mind sharing the source? It's gorgeous and really like the colors/texture. Is it wool?

    Patterned rug!

Totally patterned, and keep the patterned pillow on the sofa, it pulls it together. Coffee table or ottoman?

I am with decoenthusiaste. Another vote for removing the dining rug and placing the sofa entirely on the patterned one;)

Patterned for sure! It gives more warmth to the place as well as classiness! The neutral version is too wishy washy!!

I prefer the neutral. It provides a more sophisticated look and feel.

Patterned - as it really compliments your couch but also works better with the other rug.

Neutral as well for me I love how big the room looks! The other rug looks crowded!

I would remove the carpet under the Dining table and use it in the Living room.

Solid rug and maybe electric blue throw pillows. Like the beautiful color of the view outside.

So appreciate the comments. Avery, the rug from Jordan Interiors in Vancouver. To all those who suggested removing the carpet under the dining room table - it was just a matter of time, it is going.

I usually prefer much more subdued rugs, and that first one is a beauty as well, but in your room I think the pattern one just looks fabulous

Go with the neutral rug, the colored one is just too crazy. All the color you need is already on the sofa
  • 11 years ago

I like the second rug the best. However, I would move the sofa over the rug, so that you have a slight division of dining area and living area. The rug under the table is fine, but you need to define the spaces, as the sofa looks like it is almost touching the rug under the table. Define the spaces by giving them some space.

I agree with the above comment separation is important. I like the patterned rug better, and it would look great with modern glass table. If you go with the simple one then you can choose any coffee table and it would not look too busy. In either case the simple rug is too bland.

I like the first one. It is neutral and very elegant. Pretty room.

I normally like the clean, neutral, simple look but in this case I actually prefer the patterned one. It creates a nice color story in the living area and ties in the color of the sofa with the overall decor of the room. Looks like you have a nice floor, though, and you are covering so much of it with those 2 large rugs! I would consider removing the rug under the dining area but that's up to you. Hard surface floors are easier to clean than a rug under the dining table and chairs slide in and out easier [but if it's a wood floor put felt pads on the bottom of the chairs to protect it!]. It's funny after reading so many of these design dilemmas its quite obvious that most of the people who comment have absolutely no business giving design advice. So go with your gut! At the end of the day it's all a matter of personal opinion (:

Both rugs work and offer two different looks. But I think I prefer the 2nd rug....gives the room an eclectic feel.

Remove the rug under table and keep patterned under sectional to the back. Can you move the sofa away from the table a little. It looks like you are crowding the dining area, the dining chairs are too close to the back of the sofa.

    Colorful one.

The patterned rug is SPECTACULAR!!!!! this isn't even a contest.

Another vote for the colourful rug. You have a lovely home; and that view of Vancouver is tough to beat!

    Hi,

I agree that the patterned one looks amazing in the space! I also want to congratulate you on your bold choice of a sofa. You also had the right instinct in removing the patterned cushion and replacing it with solid colour cushions. I love the red one and would use 3 of them or maybe even dark blue...one on each end and 1 in the middle Try to find soft-fill toss cushions that can be punched down from the top to give them a warm inviting, sophisticated look. The flat ones which you have always slip down and detract from the look which you have achieved,

Remove the area rug from under the dining table. Your furniture there is beautiful.

    All the best,

    shaila

Thank you. Your input is much appreciated. Am in LA right now but will post the 'finished' product when I get back.

You know what to do now.. The sofa is awesome, not everyone would go with such a bold color, but with the style of sofa you have to do more than beige, blue or black. I like it. Glad you removed rug out from under table. It can get really messy around food. Was thinking when you go to try out different colors in pillows, artwork or other accent pieces be sure you compare them next to each other but if you can't do that then be sure to do it at the same time of day because colors really do change with the light of day. To change things up, if possible and wanted, turn the sofa where long section is along window. You will have the division because of the rug and it will also open up you space. Just an idea. You may not have a set up where that would work. Anyway. Enjoy your space.

Either would work, but it depends what style you like better. I think that your place looks very modern overall and the plain carpet works better with that look. Nice view!

I,like the colored rug for seating area. Why is the couch so close behind the dining room? Is It just the photo?
