David, if you intend to keep the tree small, then the planter pot should be small, yours is appropriate for the current size, but as you can see the tree is reaching out trying to get bigger. This tree can grow aggressively if planted outside of a planter, and yes it will grow outside in Hawaii. As I mentioned in my first response, they grow everywhere, even in cracks on sidewalks.

I'm pretty sure you can just plant it in average to crappy soil,doesn't need too much root space, full sun and deep/infrequent waterings. One of these just appeared (birds pooped the seeds?) In our pavement strip which has clay and coral no good soil, and it thrived. It even returned after we cut it down twice!

Another fun common name for this is "Scotch Attorney" (i.e., you write your contract on the leaf.)

According to Permacopia, Book III (The Weed Book) by D. Hunter Beyer (text edited for brevity): it originated in Florida, W. Indies. tolerates drought, poor or salty soils, winds, and neglect. Intolerant of cold. Book says it won't do well above 1500 feet in Hawaii, so you'd have to have near-tropical conditions to grow it outdoors.

It's rated "!!!" which stands for "very difficult to control or eradicate. Displaces Hawaiian species. Should never be planted in Hawai'i"

Clusia? In a greenhouse I kept one for years in the same pot. Just treat it like a Ficus that wants bright light.
