Columbine being consumed??

I have a ton of columbine and have never seen this happen before (see pic)... ALL the leaves, except a few basal ones, on EVERY columbine in my yard are stripped. I would guess slugs or some such but don't see them about (just noticed this today so will go out with a flashlight tonight!). Any other ideas what might be doing this? And why all of a sudden this year?? So sad... flowers are untouched, just leaves. These plants were beautiful and full just a few days ago... (not sure why the photo is rotated... sorry!)
