It sounds like a wall paper would be great in your room. This could be a tone on tone to keep it light. Everything in the room seems like a great formal feel.

To be honest, I do like wallpaper in the dining room as the other rooms are painted...but I don't know where to begin...tone on tone..hmm - color? pattern? company? I'm completely lost when it comes to decorating ..

Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige is a lovely medium taupey gray which with crisp white trim would be beautiful. Or you could wallpaper it with grasscloth in a similar color. Silk draperies in a gray/white stripe would add glamour.

I think a pale gold on gold "damask" type paper would look great in your room. The sublety of the pattern in a pale color will be soothing after your rose pattern and even make the room feel larger and more elegant if that's possible with a Waterford chandy in there. Sounds gorgeous!

I'll check out the Balanced Beige paint however I also like the idea of grasscloth with the silk striped panels - what would I put on the floor? as I mentioned, I'm a decorating zero

I'm thinking an oriental rug, one with some gray tones in it, but the other colors in the rug depend on what colors you're using in nearby rooms. Alternately, you could step it up a bit to a just slightly less traditional look and ask your local rug dealer to see some "ikat" (pronounced E-cot) style rugs. Again make sure they have some gray in them. Or you could do a geometric rug such as seen below.

Since you admitedly lack skills in the interior design department, your girlfriends with some interest in that area could well be great help if you asked them to go with you on your rug search. Treat them to lunch and a fun afternoon of shopping!
