Elephant ears: looking ahead

In the past month I've planted several varieties of elephant ears in containers. The labels indicate that at least some of them are perennials, perhaps hardy to zone 8. What should I do with them come fall? Bring them inside? If so, what conditions do they need? I overwinter some tender plants in my basement, which has windows but not bright light; we keep a light on a timer during the day, although I'm not sure how much it helps. Should I add light? Should I remove the bulbs and store them when the foliage dies? Leave them outdoors in their containers? Does it make a difference if the containers are plastic or pottery? If I can keep them alive, I'd like to do that rather than replacing them.
