Hemming store bought drapes.... opinions please

I've purchased some store bought drapes (linen/cotton blend) and need to take a good 5" off the bottoms. I know that you typically hem the bottom, then sides, lastly top. Do you think I can get away with just hemming the bottom (would end up with about a 2 1/2" seam on bottom - what it is currently) and leaving the sides open or would you rip out the sides, fold your bottom seam, sew it, then resew the sides? My only concern is getting thread that matches as well. I have 3 drapes and only one of them is visible on the bottom and would probably never be noticed if I just sewed up the bottom hem. I guess the perfectionist in me is struggling with this method as I know how to make quality drapes with that beautiful 4" bottom seam. Argh. What would you do?
