My total kitchen space is 24 feet by 12 feet. The cabinets and appliances run along 14 feet on both sides of the kitchen, however roughly half of one wall is open to the living room, so the cabinets on one side form a peninsula. On that peninsula will be an island vent hood and two smaller pendant lights flanking either side of the hood. And as mentioned in a previous post I will have lights over my sink. However all of these lights won't be on one switch and often won't be on at the same time.

The remaining space will have an informal dining table and one wall has patio doors leading outside. The dining table will not have a light specifically placed over it as it will most likely be placed at the end of the peninsula.

I'm unsure yet what size of recessed lighting will be used in this space, but I've been basing guestimates on 6" cans. I'm no lighting designer so I'm sure all of my thoughts aren't as accurate as I'd like them to be.

I know the big thing is to use smaller recessed lights but what are the pros and cons? Based on your preferred lighting size, how many do you think would appropriately light this space? Would you use a few bigger ceiling mount fixtures or track lights and then flank them with recessed lights? Or if you have other suggestions I'm all ears!
