Help identify this plant/berry

Hi,

Does anyone know the name of this plant/berry in the photos?

This picture was taken in Bermuda during the month of May. Are these edible?

You'd probably be more likely to find an answer in the Name That Plant Forum. People here sometimes are decent at identifying stuff, but it's not what this forum is really all about.

Looks like West Indian nightshade, Solanum ptychanthum. There was just an inquiry about a similar plant on the Name that Plant forum. Said to be edible, but read up on it. There's a lot of confusion out there about these black nightshades.

Hmmm. All the pictures of S. villosum I see show it with orange fruits.

be safe, dont risk death or damaged kidneys or liver trying one of those berries. If it's deadly nightshade.. 2-5 berries can kill.

bittersweet, nightshades are interesting plants. We eat tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants which are the only edible members of the group - the rest are deadly or suspect.

Ah, so you are suggesting this thing might be Atropa, not a Solanum. Hmm. Very good point. We need pictures of the flowers! Again, a very good point. But looking at some of those Atropa pictures, I note that the berries of Atropa grow singly and are subtended by a star-shaped calyx, which the above plant's fruits lack. I've heard the term "deadly nightshade" applied erroneously to a number of species. I have never seen Atropa belladonna (well, maybe once in a botanic garden in Sweden, but never in North America, and I don't remember what it looked like). It's been a while! But agreed, don't eat unknown plants, even if somebody tells you they are OK. As somebody has said "watch them pick, prepare, and eat it, and if they are alive the next morning, well, maybe you can take a taste".
