I have not asked the homeowners how their countertop is holding up but I do have my own dark pine wood countertop. You do need to be careful just like you do with natural stone. I LOVE my island!

It's been almost three years, and the counters look amazing still today. The wood is actually salvaged elm from a 100 year old barn, treated with a product called Waterlox. The counters look like new, even around the sink (hence the Waterlox). Wood definitely isn't for people who want things to stay "perfect" - it develops a patina over time. But we think it just adds to the charm and fits right in with the house.

It looks like your butcher block isn't traditional end-grain, but wider planks (~6-8 inches). Since it's three years old--any problem with warping/lifting?

No, no problems at all. It's not butcher block at all; think more like a finished table top or bar. Still looking great, and we are still immensely happy with it.
