No, it's a hideous idea, and will go down as one of the stupidest design ideas of the early 21st century!

The reason I know this is because my cabinets don't go all the way to the ceiling so I put my tin can collection up there, and have to regularly clean the grime off the cans from the dust build-up. I have to use a commercial degreaser as dust turns to a greasy grim. Granted I don't do it as often as I should as I have to get out a ladder, and I'm not that worried about them, but if you have dishes sitting on an open shelf, you're going to be washing them every time you go to use one. And if you don't use them for quite a while, they'll end up with the greasy grime my cans get, and you don't want to use a degreaser on dishes.

Thanks! I should add that we have lots of other cupboard storage too. It's about a five foot section beside the sink and over the dishwasher. I think I'll do it!

I like the look. But for me I hate seeing dishes and if they don't match its not worth loosing storage space.

We have opening shelving and love it. Our shelves have mixed uses--for display and for everyday items. We used reclaimed wood for our shelves and polished them up with wax. We love the texture the shelves and the warm wood tone adds to our kitchen. The included photos were snapped for a different purpose--but you get the idea despite the lighting and viewpoint.

I have open shelving along an entire wall in my kitchen. Everyone thinks they look great, but they are over a gas range with no vent so I can't tell you how dirty and yukky they get. Plus, I don't keep anything on them anymore because they look so cluttered. I do like the idea of open shelves, and maybe they will work in your kitchen. I would recommend just a few to have easy access to a few things. But be aware you'll need to clean them often.
