Wilting cabbage plants

last modified: 11 years ago

I transplanted some cabbage I grew from seed early this spring (early March) and they have been growing slowly this spring (more slowly than I have experienced), due to a late snow and ice (mid March) and all the overcast and rainy weather we've been having. I'm here in the Dallas area, and as you might have heard in the news, the Southern Plains has been having a historically wet spring. It feels like its almost rained every day for the past month, and especially so the past week. Parts of my yard are like a swamp, but my cabbage planting is on a slightly raised bed, but still the soil is pretty wet.

The plants had just started to form heads, and they seemed to be doing well, but today when I got home from work, many of them looked wilted! I was very surprised. Today was the first sunny day we've had in a while, and it did get into the mid 80s. I'm trying to understand what happened to them. Was it the shock of a full day of sun after being cloudy for days, or could it be just too much water? Very bummed out as I was really hoping to harvest these the next few weeks.
