Algae question

Does algae actually help clear water? I know it probably takes nutrients away from water plants........but I have a lotus bog that we thinned out (a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank sunk into the ground), and it's developed a lot of algae on the water's surface. The water is getting murky, but I don't want to remove the algae if it's actually helping to clear up the water.

So far, only 2 floating lotus leaves, but it hasn't been very warm consistently here yet.

Any reason in favor of letting the algae stay?

Thanks.
