Pots of Death?

Hello everyone again!

I am growing several varieties of peppers. The ones in the plastic box planters are doing awesomely, but I have tried to grow some in two smaller pots that my girlfriend and I have named the Pots of Death. Obviously, without much luck;]

Its the same soil thats in the larger planters and I water them the same, but the seeds didnt germinate and the sprouts I transferred have died or are dying.

My working theory is that because they are smaller and clay not plastic, the soil inside gets too hot and the roots can't take the heat.

Is there anything to this? Any suggestions on what I can do? Alternative theories?

A smaller, unglazed clay pot will dry out much more quickly than a large plastic one.

One trick is to put the smaller pot inside a larger pot so there is air space between them. But I guess your original problem was lack of large pots. Wrap some type of insulation around them maybe.

You should try a container drip irrigation system. I used to try to water them manually but even once a day didn't seem to be enough for the clay containers. I got a drip system last year and it really helps. It got me interested in drip irrigation and now I have it for my whole back yard. With my clay containers, I have those set to get water 3 times a day for 5 mins. So far it's been working really well. My in-ground plants get water every 3 days.

So maybe it is a water issue? I didnt realize that clay pots dried out so fast.

Clay pots lose water through the sides.

Get a moisture meter and use it. Water as needed, not by the calender.

And put the clay pots inside a larger plastic pot to slow down the evaporation from the sides.

Like the others said, your working theory is correct, LOL. Unglazed, porous clay or terracotta pots let more moisture evaporate from soil than glazed or plastic pots do. I love terracotta pots and use them for a lot of plants, but I do keep an eye on them more than glazed/plastic pots to make sure the plants stay well watered. They're great for cacti and succulents, so maybe plant an Aloe vera in one of yours? :) Happy gardening!
