Unidentifiable Weed

Hello All,

The weed pictured here (growing in my garden bed in MD) is quite robust. It grows through different kinds of mulch, gets over 6ft tall, and has a stalk that is very succulent. It is almost impossible to pull out by the roots. Somehow it has spread to cover almost 100 sqft in my garden bed, and I can't figure out how to control it. Does anyone have any idea what it is and/or how best to control it?

It looks like pokeweed to me. Does it flower? Take a look at some of these images:

I am not sure if it flowers, as it is still early in the season and I don't remember seeing it last year. Maybe there was one plant that I let go to seed and now it has exploded. The leaf structure looms similar, but it may be too early to tell. Also, right now the stems are green, not red like jn the pictures. However it may still be too early for that too.

That looks a lot like the Pokeweed that has started growing around here.
