if it does not fit the spot you have it in.. then you should probably consider removal.. while you can still do it for free ...

no sense trying to beat back a tree that might have 50 or 100 foot potential ... unless you have a spot.. for it ...

in a few years.. it might cost you a thousand dollars to remove it.. in a cramped suburban setting ...

we do need to ID the plant...and it would be nice to know where you are.. as to figuring its annual growth rate ...

and a pic of how much the leader has already grown this spring would be a good clue ...

all that said.. its your plant.. prune away .. pruning never killed anything ...

Of course you can, the question is whether you should. IMO it would ruin the look of the tree.

Looks like a Leyland cypress, a kind that will get much bigger than it is now.

I live in the south. It was here when I moved in. Just didn't know if it should be pruned. There's a bush much to close so I guess it should go elsewhere. The tree is also about 12" from the fence. I'm hoping it won't knock down the fence so thought pruning might help.

does it serve a purpose ... like hiding something behind it .. like a huge house ...

if not ... then think about getting rid of it ...

just because the prior owner might have made a mistake.. doesnt mean you have to live with it ...

12 inches from the fence.... or 12 feet?? ... which is more important.. and costly to replace.. the fence or the tree ...
