How can I adequately light a large kitchen without any (or minimal) can lights? I am working on electrical mark up for new construction of my house and I don't like can lights. I have multiple task and eating areas to light, but I don't want to clutter up the ceiling with too many fixtures. My house is traditional with an old house feel.

Same question for my large hearth room, which has a grid of box beams on the ceiling. Can lights are the go-to solution these days, and I need an alternative that won't clutter up the ceiling.
