Winter Kill 2015 list :(

Seems like I lost all my whites! Here are my goners...

New Day

Headliner

Pristine

JFK

Osiria -- looks like this one is irreplaceable since Palatine is no longer offering it :(

Mon Cheri

Garden Party

White Magic

Denali

These two are on thin ice...

Cafe Ole is 99% gone but it still has green cane so I've left it in the ground

Harry Wheatcroft is barely hanging on with a few new leaves :(

What did you guys lose this past winter? Anyone want to commiserate with me? I guess 11 isn't that bad considering our zone and how cold it got this past winter with the Polar Vortex and all of our record lows. Still some of my favorites were on that list.

Sorry--that's a lot to lose. What zone are you in? You could add it to your username.

White HTs are a tender group. I've lost any number of them in zone 6 winters. But 'Garden Party' survived -16 once. That's one that is probably worth replanting for you. Then there's old 'Frau Karl Druschki' that has HT-form flowers on a sturdy, repeat-blooming shrub classed as hybrid perpetual.

Thanks, Michael, I am in Z5B. I might try Garden Party again. I will check into Frau Karl Druschki, sounds like something I'd like.

I lost a bunch, mostly in pots. Last year I lost many in ground roses which I have replaced.

    Last year:

These were all in one bed
    Sultry
    Fragrant Cloud
    Tropical Sunset
    Mr. Lincoln

    This year:

    These were in pots:

    Jubilee Celebration
    Devoniensis
    Sweet Vigarosa
One Frankly Scarlett (I had two)
    One Moondance (I had 3)
    Bishop's Castle
Twilight Zone (was a band I got last year but never got to plant)
    Powerhouse (same as above)
    Mutabilis

Even though I brought the pots in for the worst of the weather, I guess some of them didn't like the back and forth. Hopefully I will get most of the potted roses planted so I don't have to worry about this next year.

I lost a Bow Bells that I loved, but she was absolutely hollow from borers, so that's what made her so tender in the winter, I'm sure :( Grafted, not ownroot.

Then I lost a new ownroot Iris Clow. She looked great and didn't appear too small going into winter! I protected her well, but she just went away directly after winter ended :( She never came back from the roots or anything.

I lost a bunch more the year before, but this past winter I thought I was ready for how the Polar Vortex has been dipping down here now. I am happy that I lost fewer than I would have, at least!

My pearly gates died . My boscobel , golden celebration and princess Alex of Kent are pitiful one cane wonders and my cl Colette's on the fence gate are looking terrible as well .

I'm probably going to dig them up and let them go. Unless someone says not too, that they'll recover , but they look so sad !

It stinks because it's as if I can see the money I spent dying ! Lol

I lost Pink Enchantment (Souvenir de Baden Baden) and Hot Princess. Later I sp'd Powerhouse, some growth, but not worthwhile. Hot Princess down to 2 canes, own root and 10+yrs. old. I think too much damage from previous winter and hit again this winter. It was on its way out. Pink Enchantment, new bush last year that thrived, only had miniscule growth that just sat there. I even pulled back the dirt for it.

I am sorry for all of you, and I should quit complaining about the small amount of damage my garden has suffered this year. I admire your good attitudes and ability to stick with your roses through thick and thin. I hope your remaining roses reward you with a beautiful show of blooms. Gardening can be rough.
Lilyfinch, the roses you name are some of my most cold hardy, and some of them are quite vigorous. Maybe you should give them a last chance. I damaged my Colette when I planted her two years ago, and she didn't look good, but boy, she came back strong and fast. I'll bet yours does, too. PAOK is such a strong grower, too. I have Boscobel, but it's still a baby, so I don't know how fast that one will recover. If you have an established Golden Cel it should recover fast, too. Give them a chance. Diane

Lily, It's touch and go. I kept my old Mr. Lincoln because it wasn't dead. But it struggled all year and finally died this spring. Sometimes replacing the rose is the best thing to do. However, I had to dig up my Crown Princess Margareta and Teasing Georgia and I could have sworn both were dead. But they came back gangbusters. My Tamora though has been puny since the 2013/14 Polar Vortex and I'm considering a replacement.

I lost almost all my potted roses, about 35. Mostly minifloras and minis. And only 3 in-ground ones. Lesson learned, make sure to plant those roses I decide I really like from my pot ghetto before winter, and try not to have a pot ghetto at all! However, I bought another 35 or so new bands, minis, and minifloras and ended up with a new pot ghetto. Sigh.....

This year, my only losses were among the HTs I kept in pots, unprotected outside all year. I don't think it was the cold so much as it was all the snow that piled on them. I left it, thinking it would provide some protection, but I didn't think about the melting. We had a couple of warm days right after the last snow, and that was enough to melt all the snow -- except what was at the base. This meant that most of the pots were flooded for a few days before I realized what was going on, and managed to shift them enough for the water to drain. Three came back to life -- 'Velvet Fragrance', 'Mirandy', and 'Big Ben'. The rest -- 'Chateau de Clos Vougeot', 'Chrysler Imperial', 'Crimson Glory', 'Heart's Desire', 'Mister Lincoln', 'Night', 'Nigrette', 'Nocturne', 'Oklahoma', 'Red Masterpiece', and 'Rose of Freedom' -- have yet to show any growth. I have other roses coming which I'll keep in their potting-up pots and tuck them in the garage or my enclosed back porch for Winter, and will pop them in the bigger pots and barrels whose roses don't wake up.

Well, I definitely learned a lesson about what I do with my pots from now on. But at the same time, I also learned last year that the roses I picked can't handle full-sun -- or, at least, their blooms can't. And I really didn't have enough places to put them that would offer midday shade, so I have other things to try this year. I already have replacements for 'Chateau de Clos Vougeot' and 'Nigrette' coming, and will likely re-order 'Crimson Glory' 'Heart's Desire' and 'Night' again, but as I refine the "look" of this garden, I think the others were just a bit too modern to blend in well.

Last year, I had only two losses -- 'Jaune Desprez' and "Secret Garden Musk Climber". The former was replaced with 'Baltimore Belle' as I was leery of trying another Tea-Noisette in such an exposed position. The latter was replaced with a more mature specimen of the same, which seemed to whine and complain about this Winter, but made it through and is pumping out new growth.

    :-)

So sorry to hear about all of your losses. Seems I was lucky but we had a mild winter. All my pots survived but I had them in the shed. Only lost three in the ground, 2 Amber Queen and a Cherry Brandy.
