Your room looks very nice! You need a larger rug, perhaps something with black in it?

I would play up the yellow from your art and then add some great drapery and pillows that incorporated the other colors in your art (blue or green?).

Thanks Maureen. I was thinking of using yellow as an accent color but it's really not my favorite. Our leather chairs are brown. We live in the country so there is no real need for drapes, but I guess I could choose some just from the point of view of adding color. Do you think that dramatic colored drapes would suit our living room area. It's very small but we have very high ceilings.

You could select another color in your art or just go with tone on tone beige and beige/rust pillows. I might add beige linen roman blinds on the lower windows, but leave the top window as is. There are so many directions you could go..maybe look at pictures on Houzz and you'll start to see color combinations that you are drawn to, pillow and rug ideas as well. Pics below reflect a casual earthy room, but you may want more vibrant colors.

Thanks so much for all the ideas Sandra. We live in the country on 90 acres so we do indeed have a lovely view. I'm really leaning towards the rugs that have a bit of orange in them as well as the simple tone on tone ones and then maybe pop it up with bright colored cushions.

Brightening the room with a yellow patterned rug would look gorgeous in the room. Maybe a slightly larger size, Our rule of thumb is to have the front two legs of the furniture on the rug (back two off).

I also like the idea of bringing a color from the art and corner arrangement, but was going to suggest a rich olive green. That would bring some warmth without getting too loud for your subdued earthtones. Golds and oranges can continue to come in via accessories.

Wow, just loving all the suggestions. Although you cannot see it, the kitchen and open dinning area are right next to the living room in an open concept style. I have used orange accents in the kitchen area. Should I stay with orange in the living or would it be ok to change it to yellow?

This is the wall at the front entrance so it is directly opposite the living room and the large windows. This painting is rather large and one of the reasons I chose to go with orange accents. I'm just not sure if I should now incorporate orange into the area rug or would that be too much orange in a relatively small room.

Alice, I noticed that the pictures in the living room had more yellow, but you also stated that yellow was not your favorite color. Don't get something that you don't like. The first rug I sent you that you liked would go very nicely in the room. The others are a bit over the top, but you never know what people are going to like and I prefer to give options. The first rug has orange, not enough to overwhelm, but will tie in nicely with your print. They are far enough apart that it will not be an issue with too much. The other colors in the rug, white brown and green will tie great to the furniture and the pattern is good. The second one has good colors but I think is a bit too casual for your room. But again, you will live with it everyday. I like color in a room and sometimes a print or a couple of small accessories don't make that much of an impact. Keep in mind, that you can live with a rug for a few days and if it doesn't work...take it back and try again :>)

A couple of throw pillow. Keep the orange to a minimum but still have a touch.

Here are more rug ideas with rust or orange colors (some more subdued/muted than others).....

Here are a couple others. The 2nd and 3rd pictures are of the same rug....with just subtle hints of the yellow (like in your art) but not too much to overwhelm the space.

The last has some of the rust/orange you like as well....perhaps to tie in the colors of your other art piece too.

Wow, you have some potential here. You are on the right track, you're just a little off. You need to stick with a cream and black look here. I would keep it rich and sophisticated. Get rid of that standing flower arrangement, that does not match with anything, and those two pictures on the wall. If that TV is staying there, then it needs to be sitting on, or hanging above, a bigger wood console ... that one is too small. Then you need a bigger area rug, I would stick with light neutrals (like you have) with a geometric print. I would put end tables on either side of the cream couch, remove the table between the dark chairs along with the knick knacks on them. I would put one of those large silver lamps in the corner that hangs way over into the center of the room. And I would put a couple of throw pillows in geometric prints with a luxurious animal fur throw on the couch. Then I would put something more interesting and bigger on the coffee table.

I like the yellow, gold/blue rug (image 2) as well as the multi colored rug (Image 3). The pillows you posted with orange and yellow are also catching my fancy.

Although I initially was shying away from yellow I do like some of the more muted yellows in some rugs.

Alice, The rugs and pillows are from Overstock.com When I was looking it up for you I found 2 more that I liked so will send those item # also. Look them up. One even has a little yellow in it. Not sure what size you need. Rule is all front legs of furniture on rug. So be sure and measure. Just remember that black rugs show every piece of dog and cat hair and piece of lint. Perhaps look at rugs.com or irugs.com. You can order online. I have. Very reliable. I would not get scatter cushions till you have decided on the rug. Beautiful room. Perhaps take colors out of your wall pictures which are gorgeous.

Alice, definitely the dried flowers must go, ( very 80's) and if you can a large wall unit for the TV. Love, love your windows. I have put drapes up that don't move, they are for show, but I have blinds that can open and close on all windows. I love your room. Would love to see a beautiful lamp on a side table or console. Pics are of red entrance hall rug, bedroom bay windows, patio rug, and living room drapes. I alternated the drapes with 2 colors. One a plain cream, the other with a one with a pattern. But I never move them as all windows have blinds. These rugs come from irugs. Maybe blinds for your window just at the bottom half. Remember a lot of what you are doing is just for eye candy.

Yes things are out of proportion. Small couch, large "pictures" on the wall, large flowers and pot, small TV (appears in wrong spot), yes small area carpet, large sofa facing TV.

Alice, Several have commented on the large floral arrangement. I would suggest that you replace it. 1st, it kinda makes your living room look like a hotel lobby and 2nd, it must be a B**** to keep dusted :>) Why not put a corner book shelf there? And what are you doing for lighting in the room. You might consider getting at least one table lamp for between the chairs and perhaps a floor lamp in the corner behind the other table. I understand that you did not ask for advice except for the rug and pillow, so take these ideas for what they are worth to you. You have a beautiful room and have done an excellent job. The windows are great just as they are, but a couple of tweaks for functionality and eye appeal will not cost a lot and really make the room shine.

I have a Tiffany floor lamp on the end of my cream leather sofa and I love it.

I really had not considered replacing the flower arrangement at all, but maybe you are right. It just seems to fill in that corner so well and seems to go with the tall windows. I do like the idea of a bookshelf, it's just that it would seem so small compared to the flower arrangement. But once I have the right size rug it will probably make a difference. I was going to focus on getting lamps as the next project for this room. All we have now is recessed lighting. Can you tell me where the book stands and lamps are from? I thought the metal lamps would be a nice contrast to the leather chairs. These lamps would go on the square table, if you want one for rd table instead of the floor lamp the shade should be round.

You've done a wonderful job. Your head must be spinning with all these suggestions,,,,so here's another one, lol. I would do a round coffee table. You have a lot of square in the room and that would soften it up a bit. I would do a natural fiber rug and then do some soft pillows in neutral tones so they don't compete with the pictures but softens the edges. Here is an example of the coffee table. Whatever you do will look wonderful!
