We would be happy to explain. The roller shades in this picture have aluminum
side channels, a sill channel and a sealed hem bar (or flat bottom bar). This is basically a frame around the shade
that prevents light leakage around the edges. This is a great option when you
want to have the optimal light blockage for room-darkening applications and A/V
applications. In addition, this gives a clean,
polished look to your windows. The
channels can be used for roller shades, honeycomb shades and skylight
applications. The channels can also be used with a variety of operational
systems; such as, cord, motorized and cordless.

The style and specifications of the channels differs by
manufacturer so it’s important to make sure that you use the right
system/manufacture for your needs.

Thanks for the info! Two quick follow-up questions: 1) Do the side and bottom channels obstruct much of the window? We have great views out of our windows where we want to put blackout blinds so we don't want to obstruct the view too much when they are open, and 2) Do the roller shades come in an automated/remote control option? Who is the manufacturer of this style? The track looks nicer than some competitors.

Hunter Douglas is the manufacturer on those shades. They are Designer Roller/Screen Shades or the Duette/Applause Honeycomb Shades.

Answers to the questions.

1.) Do the side and bottom channels obstruct much of the window?

This would depend upon what you consider "too much obstruction" of the window. The channel's purpose is to cover the light gap that each shade will have when inside mounted. If you give us a size of the window opening, one of our talented design specialists will be able to tell you exactly how much window real estate will be uncovered. I attached the specs to show the sizing of the channels. Hope this helps!

2.) Do the roller shades come in an automated/remote control option?

Yes, they do! In fact, you can operate your shades with a continuous cord loop OR with motorization. For you techy lovers out there, you can even operate your motorized rollers shades (with side channels) from your iPad or iPhone! Super cool!
