Your granite is lovely! You might ask your granite yard if the slab can be honed rather than polished for a warmer look - we've been doing that a lot lately with beautiful results. Have you considered any of the porcelain tiles that look like wood - if you scroll through this article (go down a bit) you'll see a lovely slate grey that might add the texture and interest you're looking for. As long as the little sample looks nice with your wood floor in person, I think the gray tile might be great. Funny, but I'm with your Hubby - tile in kitchens and no marble counters. I love the granite choice. And, following up with cg's comment, I found a quartzite slab, fell in love with it, but paid a little extra to have it sent to be leathered. SO glad I did that. I love the leathered finish. I think it was $200-$300 to have the slab leathered and so worth it.

Your granite is beautiful, and I really like your tile choices. What are you drawn to? The lighter tile or darker one? And, which one looks best with your hardwood floors? I think both choices look great with your granite and cabinets.

Once that baby comes you will be so glad to have beautiful, easy-care surfaces in your kitchen. I like the dark tile with less movement for the floor. You can do this!

What is the name of the lighter gray tile? We are in the process of changing our floors in the kitchen, too, and we've also decided against wood floors in , so I'm searching for a gray porcelain tile.

I like the darker tile, but make sure you like it next to the wood.

Love the granite. I much prefer the lighter tile for the floor. I don't care for the darker gray tile with the granite or the existing wood floor. I would go with a very simple off white (not cream colored, just slightly off from bright white) tile for the backsplash. Either a subway shape or an arabesque. You can go with something that does not have a perfectly smooth finish (slightly undulating) to provide some interest but I would not go with a pattern. Good luck.

Thank you cg! I do actually like those wood-look tiles a lot, but I fear that it will look strange to transition from our existing wood floors into another "wood" floor. I don't know, maybe that is just me?

Ann, I'm sure my hubby would love that you agree with him :) Another thing I think about is what all I'm going to break in the kitchen now...I've always had laminate counters and currently have laminate flooring in the kitchen. It is a super ugly kitchen with original 60s cabinets and counters, and some 80s flooring, but man, I sure don't break any dishes LOL. I was thinking at least with the wood floors maybe I'd save a few there. Oh well...give and take with everything I suppose.

Oops Karen, forgot to tell you the tile names: big one on the right is Flint - White Porcelain. The tiny square on top of the door is Onyx Matte - Orion Blanco Matte Porcelain. I got them from my local ProSource wholesale floorcoverings store, I don't know if there are other locations besides in my area?

Karen, I don't know why but I like something about that darker gray tile. However when it's next to my wood floor I feel that it looks too dark and that it may be too dark once installed in our kitchen. I think what I like about it is the idea of the dark gray with the bright white cabinets...but with the rest of the house, it may not work...

Deborah thank you for all of your input! I really appreciate it. Yes I really want white subway tile, I forgot to mention that! Off-white, not bright white - got it. Is that so it relates to the granite? Also, I hear you on the lighter floor tile. I think it will look better next to the wood and keep the overall look of the kitchen lighter (which is a small space). Did any of the lighter tile in that picture look "right" to you or should I keep looking? And do you think the lighter tile should have a gray tone, or more of an off-white tone, like the subway tile you are suggesting? Or something else...Thank you so much for your help!!!!!!

I really disagree with your husband (and others) about the wood floor. I put it in with granite counters---absolutely no problems for the past 15 years. However, to keep everyone happy, I too would go with the lighter grey tile. BTW, your granite is gorgeous!

I like the lighter tile with the cabinets & granite countertops. It will keep the kitchen light and bright.

Thanks janerama I really disagree with him too haha and I cried my eyes out last night (ugh yes, I'm crazy) but I don't think he's going to budge on this one. He told me it's only a matter of time before we have a leak in the kitchen....maybe a tad cynical? ;) Thank you, the granite has most definitely grown on me and I do agree that it's really pretty. We both kept coming back to it so we knew it was "the one". Now, if I could just feel that way about the tile... :)

I can't get the photo to enlarge enough on my computer, but it appears the color tones of the tile laying on the floor in front of the granite slab tie in nicely with the granite. I can't really see it well.

Here is a photo of a just slightly off white tile with a white cabinet but a warmer tone granite such as yours. This particular tile is the Adex Neri (it's called bone but trust me it looks just slightly warm white in person - not at all like their website). You don't have to get it beveled like this one since it comes in a plain subway as well. I was thinking this would pull the cabinets and granite together.

The granite is gorgeous with the cabinets. The dark tile might look a little more urban than you may prefer. The lighter one will work, but what about a tile a tad lighter than the first grey one?

Deborah, thank you so much for the subway tile suggestion! Found it online where I can order it. I was thinking the same thing about that tile in my picture laying on the floor that I had basically written off; it looks like it goes well with the granite in the photo. I swear in person it looked too yellow. I believe it was labeled as an ivory tile...shoot I cannot remember anything else about it though.

Center Stage, thank you for your help. I'm pretty sure I have that tile also. We took several from Lowe's. In person, I remember thinking it just didn't seem right. I wish I could put my finger on the "why"....maybe because I need to find something that goes with the main background color of the granite? It is just so difficult for me to go to one place and pick tile, then narrow down which to take to the granite place, see one little tile in a warehouse with fluorescent lighting and THEN try to imagine it in my home. This is why I am freaking out about this. How in the world do people do this and have it turn out well?? Putting the floor down before the cabinets and granite goes in, while being the "right" way, is SO scary to me.

Thoughts on this? Would still need to see in person to check undertones (which I can unfortunately have a hard time seeing)...but this is very light, and plain and simple.

No to the gray tile. Your wood floors are beautiful, but I would not want them in the kitchen. If you cook and or bake, you would spend a great deal of time trying to keep the wood floors looking decent. The light tile looks like a good choice to me. I have had both wood and tile in my kitchen. Your kitchen will be beautiful.

I don't want to make suggestions that will make things more difficult, but you can go to a tile specialty store and take your cabinet and countertop samples and they can help you find a tile for the floor. If you are willing to pay the price for the Barcelona that you mention above (which is not a cheap tile), then you would have lots of choices and someone to help you in person. It might ease your mind some and make it easier. They are trained to help.

Deborah, no I think that is a great suggestion and I have been taking in my door and that little square sample in with me. The problem I think is that sample is not a good match of our actual slab. It was from a different granite yard and I don't even think it's the same name as our granite (but it was very close). I can't get a sample of our actual granite until they start cutting it, which may be too late for me to make the tile decision. I'm texting my cabinet person to see if there's any way they can cut me a sample asap. I just can't do this without seeing the tile and granite together.

And yeah that Barcelona is definitely pricey :/ My hubby wasn't thrilled with the cost of it but he knows I'm not so thrilled about giving up the floor I really want...I do hope I could find something cheaper but I feel desperate at the moment lol.

It is pricey, as I believe it might be actual limestone, but something that replicated the look would work well.

I'm generally not a fan of granite but you've chosen a gorgeous slab! I really love the lighter grey floor tile. The darker grey tile you showed reminded me too much of an industrial/commercial look. The lighter grey tile (second to last photo) is just enough understated color to add some dimension to the other elements you've chosen. Hope all these comments are helping you out!

I hate to be a spoil sport but I held off putting tile in my house (except the bathrooms) until my kids were older...I worried about babies/toddlers bonking their heads on the floor. Probably more likely to happen than a significant leak. There is good looking linoleum out there! Now that the kids are grown (and gone) I have wood floors in my open plan...including the kitchen.

juudean, I thought of that too and the best thing I can come up with is just to use some baby gates...kind of a pain but totally do-able with how our kitchen is set up in our house.

I would definitely go with the darker gray tile. As long as it looks good next to the hardwoods. It contrasts the white cabinets and counters very well and ties in with the darker hardwoods surrounding it.

LOVE that granite and white cabinets with the darker matte charcoal gray tile. Don't go too light on a floor! Look at other kitchen pics--for some reason it looks dated to have a lighter tile floor, no matter how pretty they all look together it should be darker at the base. I also prefer the honed look for marble and imagine that would be good for the granite too. It's more authentic looking for some reason. Also another dated look is thin countertops--go for a thick piece of granite not thin! Another way to not look dated is don't have the counter hang over too much--as aligned with the edge of the cabinet as possible. Don't know why I'm mentioning "dated" so much but I feel your choices look perfect so now it's all about the details. Enjoy! It's going to look great.

Heather did you finish your kitchen? Can you post pictures? I am looking for a similar look and the tile part is really hard. The darker gray tile is too modern, so need style but not so modern and not too white or dark.
