Carpet Undertones!

last modified: 11 years ago

Hey everyone :) Trying to pick out carpet for master bedroom. Right now there is a light beige horribly thin carpet in there that needs to be replaced. This is a LARGE bedroom with lot of open floor space so there are big areas with no furniture breaking up the view of the floor.

Walls are BM Palladian Blue (love love love) and furniture is cherry. Drapery is a yellowish undertoned creamy kind of linen color (so is the bedding). The wall behind the bed has wallpaper that is same aqua as the Palladian Blue, with a gold toile pattern on it. Below are pictures from all sorts of angles, up against the furniture and drapes and also up against the doorway to the master bath (which has what I think is yellowish undertone tiling).

I am very challenged when it comes to identifying undertones in neutral colors (I think I overthink it WAY too much and make it more complicated than it has to be) but I don't want to make an expensive mistake. Not entirely sure what undertone I should even be looking for...yellow? green? I know definitely NOT pink.

In the photos below the darker carpet sample looks like it clashes with the cherry wood. But the lighter sample I am afraid might look like glowing yellow. HELP!!!

I have read that the small little sample squares are not good enough....but Home Depot is telling me that it might not be possible to obtain a larger sample piece.

Right now the existing carpet reads pink to me. I have TWENTY or so other little carpet square samples that I tossed to the side because these two seemed to go the best but maybe neither of these are right.

Between these two colors your finishes seem to favor the lighter one.

I agree with the lighter one.

I have similar carpet as both your samples. The darker one is in the LR and I love how it grounds all my furniture. I bought the same carpet in a lighter color for my second floor bedrooms. I think it's more appropriate for a bedroom. Be careful it's not gold like in your third photo. It looks good in your last two photos.

We bought from a carpet store where they let us bring home large samples, and they ordered those that were just the small squares on the board.

Can you try a silvery gray?

I think they are both a little dark overall.

Thank you everyone. lazy_gardens - I never considered silver or gray because the pattern in the wallpaper is gold. Everything in my house is mostly warm-toned.

I agree that the lighter one seems best. Maybe neither of these are the one and I need to keep searching. Should I be looking for a yellow undertone or green???

The lighter color looks good to me. And it appears to have light highlights, as well. If you went with the darker color, you may find it too drastic a change.

I just took some more pictures with additional samples. In these pictures I excluded the dark sample from above but kept the lighter one which is now on the left in all pictures. Should I be targeting yellow undertoned carpet? Or green?

i would probably choose the one on the far right... the sample 3rd from the left looks like it might have alittle bit of a pink undertone in the 1st picture...? if it doesn't, that one might be my 1st choice-- It depends on whether you want the carpet to be a little deeper in color or not. I like the deeper colors in contrast with your trim, tile, walls, and curtains--- I think the deeper colors look nice with the dark furniture too.

of the 2 lighter colors, I prefer the one on the left...

busybee3 - the one that you like best on the far right...do you think that is reading olivey green? It seems to have a green cast to it. I was afraid that one clashed with the cherry furniture. I really want something neutral and am unsure if any of these samples are appropriate.

I don't see olive green, but I probably am not seeing it's true color---

I think I would prefer a darker color over the light options best tho-- look at the samples in different light during day and night-- narrow it down to a couple and see if you can get a larger sample of them from the flooring company- I find larger samples are always more helpful!

i think patterned carpeting can also look really pretty in bedrooms- esp if you have relatively plain bedding and a lot of open floor space... have you thought about that?

Not too light and not too dark

Those dark carpets at night yikes!...........you just can't see without lots of lights because the floor swallows all the available light in the room.

If you number those samples 1-4 left to right, I like #1 and #3, and I like #3 the best!!!

Try placing a large white piece of poster board under the samples leaving space between them. In the last photo, I think I like the one to the far left the best because it's going to seem much darker once in the whole room.

Id' get the samples off the old carpet that's going. Instead, I'd focus on the tile in the bathroom and choose the carpet color that's the same (or closest to) hue family as the tile. From out here on the interwebs, it looks like the first one that beverlyfla has circled in red.

hmmm, misformink, I've found the opposite to be true- i've found carpeting is like paint- once all down, doesn't look as dark as the small sample...

Wow beverlyfla!!! Very impressive! I do keep leaning towards the sample on the far left because it seems like it will blend the best. It has flecks of different colors in it as opposed to the others which are solid colors. A friend of mine suggested I go back to the store and grab as many of that same sample as I can and duct tape them together underneath so that I can have an instant large sample piece.

Can't the store order you a larger sample? Or can't you sign out a carpet sample board?

I don't think so...we went to Home Depot. When we originally went in, I asked the salesperson about obtaining larger samples and she made it sound like it would be hard for her to do that...she said something about having to make a request to the mill and she claimed that they don't normally do that.
