I think it depends on the shade of dark brown you are talking about. If you want to go as dark as an espresso finish (tending toward black), it would look amazing with the lighter carerra you are talking about.

I disagree - The countertop ties in with the darker floor tiles and the contrasting band of tile in the walls - and the cabinetry relates to the lighter tiles, creating an overall cohesive appearance.

Dark wood would be completely random and out of place - and a lighter stone top, while blending in too much w/ the undermount sinks - would not work well with the tile wainscoting and floor tiles, making it appear to be a mismatch.

Thanks so much for the info! I will be more precise with my idea.... Same floor, dark wood vanity (not quite espresso, but a rich dark brown stain), carerra counter top ( would the two tones in the carerra pick up the two tones in the floor?) No tile at all on the walls but painted either stark white or a soft grey. The thing is, I have a dark brown vanity with carerra marble top and I am trying to find a cool tile to go with it. After all the research I have done for this look, I can only find bathrooms with a really dark grey tile(which I don't like) or solid carerra tile on the floor, or wood floors. I wanted something a little different! What do you think?!

That being the case, I'd consider using the same Carrera in the lighter checkerboard tile, and a darker brown stone (almost the same color as the wood) for the darker checkerboard - That way you'll get a cohesive appearance by repeating the colors within your space.

I know this comment comes after many months, but I have chosen similar tiles in a checkerboard pattern for a house we are building. I have the two colours of the tiles to use as countertop and cupboard. Do you think that a darker cupboard with a lighter top will look better or vice versa? Thanks :)

You may be able to stain/paint this piece very easily.

I think it would be gorgeous. As the designer for this project, we had limited options because the case work and additional cabinetry in the room were going to be white. I used this same countertop on an espresso cabinet with marble floors and it gave it a very transitional look.

This comment/question is about this photo and for mistya925. We are planning a nearly identical look to this photo--white cararra subway marble tile wainscoting, soft grey paint above, grey marble vanity tops, and we LOVE this checkerboard floor. However, we have been planning cherry wood cabinets for the vanities. The consensus here seems to be that the wood should be either espresso (near-black) or white. I had read somewhere, that wood, being organic, was a neutral in the scheme.....but now wonder if it would look good.

So two questions: If the photo above had the vanity switched to cherry wood, and all else virtually the same, how would it look?

And: Mistya925, did you ever do your room in these colors and do you have pictures?
