hmmmm i cannot tell the scale of the lower windows, how high is it from the floor to the bottom of the upper window sill? if its less than 10', you'll need to put your drapes to the ceiling or you'll thwack your room in half in an unbecoming fashion.

My thoughts exactly, nnigrt. It looks like those windows are sized as if it were 2 separate floors so not treating them as 1 window would end up looking very bad. Just put that rod all the way to the ceiling and wide enough to be able to draw back the curtains to reveal the beautiful window. You might also want to paint that space between the lower and upper windows white to match the trim/fireplace. Curtains can be white, grey or beige OR, if you aren't afraid of some color, you can go with a solid or pattern that matches your sofa.
