Changing the direction of install with a wood floor is a personal choice (so long as the subfloor is appropriate). A herring bone is a magnificent form of installation and alwasy sets off a room.

So long as the home is big enough to handle a change like this (it would look strange in a home that is 750sf; a home that is 1700sf could be touch and go; a 2,000+ sf home should be able to handle it) then I would say go for it.

Would you be doing the whole downstairs area in the same wood stain/ shade? If so and you wanted to do the difference patterns, I would suggest breaking up the two rooms with a rug or tile boarder.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! The house is 3700 sq ft and the downstairs is 2200 it's one big open floor plan do the dining room will be separated with wood sliding doors with Frosted glass inserts and thought it would be nice to use a herringbone pattern. Just didn't know if it would look weird.

For what it's worth... we do that all the time.

As a matter of fact, we're making a Herringbone (Walnut) that will accompany matching plank in another room right now.

Many Folks decide to use a "pattern" in a specialty area, and use matching plank for fear of the pattern being "too much" throughout.

Here's a shot of Herringbone that was used in a library/office (from the French doors)and was adjoining plank in the rest of the house. Unfortunately, we don't have a pic of the meeting place in the doorway... but maybe you get the idea.

(By the way... we had just applied an additional coat of finish even though our flooring was custom prefinished in the shop, so the floor looks glossy because the finish was still wet).
