First Time Homeowner-Mid Century Modern-Help with Kitchen Design!!

I am purchasing this home mid renovation and I really reeeally need some advice/thoughts on the Kitchen design. Currently set up for light soffits and hood. Should I keep that design? Do you think the soffits would make the kitchen look smaller than it already is?? Should I go with a ductless hood instead? Since there isn't much room on main wall for upper cabinets, I was going to add some open shelving and magnetic strips for knives, etc.

There is a half wall that I was planning to either relocate the refrigerator there or make use of these original upper cabinets to use as pantry space then add some base cabinets and countertop. Most would say knock down the wall and add an island but I really would like to keep the original design and I like the funky wall! :) We are thinking of knocking one brick layer down to get it to 43 inches and making it into a small bar top.

The backsplash pictured is original but would have to get covered with drywall to make space for electrical work that needs to be done but I plan to use the exact same style. The cabinets are Ikea and we were going to use the butcher countertop since it was already purchased by previous owner. All white walls and we may end up having to paint the exposed beams white as well-unfortunately..(due to white wash beams in living room)

The soffits should go. That's one thing that really dates a kitchen and it begs the question of why it was even there. Taking out the soffit doesn't mean no external venting. The venting may not even have to change location, but you will need to buy a new chimney for your hood so it looks like it goes all the way to the ceiling.

@Dawn Danley-Nichols Thank you! This is my first post and really appreciate any advice! That was my initial thought to get rid of the soffits but there is only track lighting and I was afraid I would need more lighting. There is an extra piece to the hood that hasn't been placed since the venting hole hasn't been made yet. Should I continue with plans to add the hood or use that space for upper cabinets with a microwave? I was thinking to update the hood to something more modern like this one:

You may need to add can lights to account for removing the lights that were in the soffits. But that should be a very easy move for an electrician since the electrical/wires have already been ran. It's a matter of personal preference whether you like a microwave over your range. I personally don't, but there's nothing wrong with it.

I agree that you should remove the soffit. It works against the angled line of your kitchen ceiling. Run the vent of your range hood to the ceiling. Perhaps you can install a microwave drawer somewhere? I, too, like your funky brick wall! It adds character to your home. Can't wait to see photos as you progress with your remodeling!

Between the limited wall space for under counter lighting and the exposed pine beamed ceiling, it makes the lighting options trickier. Should I move the refrigerator? Note- the window shutters and chandelier are being replaced. Going for an organic modern design in the house. This will be the new chandelier above the dining table to get a feel of the style I'm going for. What about pantry ideas and making use of the original upper cabinets?

Also the framing was done by previous owner. If we don't do the soffit lighting then I don't think we should or need to do the dry wall. Keep the existing backsplash and save a few inches by removing the framing..??

The backsplash looks to be in good shape. If you could save it that would certainly be the best option. My home was built in 1960 and has a similar ceiling. Please don't paint the beautiful wood. I certainly understand your lighting dilemma. Have you considered under counter lighting? Perhaps wiring going thru the cabinets. Definitely something to ask an electrification about.
