HELP! I fell in love with granite I can't afford...
Comments (135)I know this is an old topic, but I ran into a similar problem. That "Fusion" stone is not well suited to being installed horizontally (as countertops). Plus, if placed on top of any wood cabinets, it will battle horrendously with it for eye supremacy. It really needs to be vertical, like as wall art, or as a fireplace surround and mantle. If cut for a countertop it loses much of the intricacy of the waves of color. Larger pieces preserve that beauty....See MoreGranite installer put in wrong sink - says they can't fix
Comments (21)I currently live with a 60/40 split and HATE IT. I wish I could have a 50/50. I find the smaller side so annoying. That's me. The work looks good. It was signed for. Everything is "good" on their side of things. The sink was not addressed at time of signing which will probably mean this is going to fall (mostly) to you. As Joseph points out, it can be done. It is finicky, painful work but it can be done. If you have talent. The contractors may not have the skill nor the inclination to help you with this. You can still go to them and explain your discontent and see if a small discount could be had. This is about all I would expect to happen from a company that is already saying "Nope. Can't be done. Sorry." Knowing the building industry as I do, I would not suggest pushing a professional/company into doing something they are unfamiliar with. It normally makes a bad situation MUCH MUCH WORSE. And you have already found out your granite is the last of its kind. Which means if they mess up (with something they already do NOT want to do) then there is no going back. If you manage to get a small discount out of them (they will do it out of the goodness of their hearts...not because they messed up with the contract) then you can go ahead and shop around someone who has the ability to change the sink (like Joseph). Personally I would live with it for a while to see if it is something I could "live with". If not, go ahead and get it changed later....See Morecan’t find backsplash for this busy granite!! help!!!!
Comments (125)mj B. Glad lindsey hooked you up! As for the travertine, you have to get the higher quality ivory that doesn't have those pink tones. that's what people don't like. I think once you get your samples and see them in person w/the stone, you'll get a better idea. pungogirl,,,glossy's do not compete. I don't know where you got this notion. Your 'busy' granite (it's really not that busy) is quite different from OP's granite. his has a very pronounced veining and coloring. yours (if it's similar to that pic) is more of a muted busy. two different looks. I appreciate that you like HD and Floor and Decor, but I would never recommend people buy any natural stone from either place. They use bottom of the barrel quality and try and pass off their China White marble as Carrara. It's not. Only marble from Carrara Italy is actual Carrara. Their natural stone doesn't have the good coloring or durability that higher end marbles have. If you're going to pay $15-20 sq ft for marble, then get the good stuff. ya know? There is a reason F&D and HD have low pricing....See MoreHelp! Measuring error discovered after granite countertops installed
Comments (6)I am a fabricator. The objective of the field measure is to measure what's there and make the countertops to fit. If the tile splash was part of the countertop order then the height difference should have been caught by the measure guy so you had an opportunity to get it corrected or pick an alternate splash that would not be a problem. It's not the typical countertops expertise to reset cabinets and a spacer under the countertrop of 1-1/4" would be easily visible so that's not a very good option. IMHO your options are to have the countertop on the lower area removed (at countertop suppliers expense) and have the cabinets reset properly by a cabinet pro. . (Warning: this could be a "can or worms"). Note the expense of resetting the cabinet(s) is not the responsibility of the countertop supplier. Alternatively, pick a different splash that won't make the height difference conspicuous....See Morestephanj
