Entry way decorating help!

We recently moved into a new house and I am having a hard time deciding how to decorate the entry way. I want some kind of console table but unsure about if it should be placed on the short wall with a mirror or on the long "wall" underneath the stairs? Any advice would be appreciated. Wall color is Ben Moore sleeps wool, rest of house is light Greys/blues, dark oak floors (Jacobean stain). Thanks for any advice!

I would put a circular table there with some art.

well, i don't see an outlet, so you won't get a lamp in there, so go with a small table and mirror on the narrow wall. it would look odd to have a longer table without a lamp, but not a short table.

Boring but practical me, I would put a narrow antique hall tree on the short wall.

A smal round table would look great in the corner with some flowers to freshen up the home. Your home seems lovely by the Way.

Great suggestions so far. I agree a round table would look nice in the space or perhaps a tall plant. But it sounds like you like the idea of having a table in your entry way.

(if there is access under the foyer from the basement, its pretty easy for an electrician to add an outlet if you want to have a lamp.)

Ok, so I picked up the round table and put some accessories on it. Still not sure it looks right, I do have access to an outlet on the short wall, but not sure if lamp would be better?

I also wanted to get a area rug for the space, but not sure if it should go in the area in front of the table or in front of the door. Advice greatly appreciated.

I would put the rug by the door and I would add a chair to this cozy little nook. A lamp could be useful and wouldn't hurt to try one on the table, but what you have is lovely. Click picture to enlarge .

Your photo with the circular table is what I was going to suggest - similar wood to the stairs and circular in that corner. I think the scale may just be wrong. Try something a little taller with a larger top and perhaps heavier/thicker support and base. Then add a single large vase with flowers. Keep it simple and classic like the woodwork of your beautiful home. Good luck.

The table is fine if you add a chair or an ottoman or pouf. Seating is always useful by an entrance.

Agree with Mark that the table would be better with seating. If you decide against seating then I think the table is too small.

Just to give you another option--I had an almost identical entryway in a former house, and we put a grandfather clock against the tall wall. That was all that was needed for us.

Because this hall doesn't quite line up with the doorway, the usual recommendation of a long runner won't work. I'd try a durable rug right inside the door, and then if you decide the entry needs further warming up, a coordinating but more decorative rug centered in this part of the entry -- an oval shape might help it not seem out of place.

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried a chair from the dining room in the space and it looked too big and almost as if it was obstructing the walkway. Then I tried an ottoman from the living room and I think the shape (or even a small bench or pouf) may work best. Here is a picture.

Tall urn with colored weeds in the corner. Maybe sit a small Tiffany lamp on your table to add some warmth and color to that corner.

This space you have is very nice. However, the ottoman is too small. You need a chair there and to edit the tabletop (too many small items) and take away that plant as it is way too small.

On the other hand, if you don't feel that seating can be placed there comfortably then get a larger round table and a larger vase with greenery and use the small ottoman. Visually there are too many small items gathered in the space the way you have it now.
