Did you invest a lot in these chairs? Not sure it is worth refinishing and reupholstering, which would run you a couple of hundred dollars a chair at least for reupholster and the same for refinishing. Are they worth $400-$500 each to change or would you be best starting over with something more your style.

They could easily be painted and you could do the upholstery work yourself. I am not a pro and have updated many dining room chairs. Surely you have a fabric outlet where you could purchase fabric at a significant savings. Do not be afraid to tackle this project.

The wood looks very shiny, is it solid wood or veneer? It would take a lot of sanding and priming to paint these if they are solid wood.

I would take a chair at a time and even if you have to spread them out over a few weekends, it would be worth redoing if you dislike them. Also consider chalk paint. In regards to reupholstering, I have done dining chairs and some antique chairs and found when there is piping involved (and tacks) it's a bit more difficult, so would suggest a professional if you have never done this before. At least the wood would have been done, which will save you money. If you purchase the fabric yourself it can be a lot less expensive than using the fabrics from the upholsterer. Before you decide what you want to do, take a look at lots of pictures so you can envision what the end result will look like. It's always a shame to have an idea and when finished and you've spent the money, you don't like them.
