Sort of depends on your climate. If it is too cold to grow year round, it won't last removed from soil. Try potting some up and keeping it in a sunny warm spot indoors.

There are lots of different varieties of gingers some are more cold hardy than others. We need to know what zone you are in and what variety of ginger you are wanting to grow.

I live at an area equivalent to USDA zone 10 (+30/+35 F, -1.1/+1.6 C). There is frost in winter.

The ginger I am enquiring is the common ginger sold at grocery stores.

I don't dig mine up, I am in Texas, zone 9b
