Should dahlias be stored overwinter in zone 7a?

I have heard from various websites grower s have successfully left dahlia tubers undergroubd in zone 7 with regrowth the fallowing season. But, i have also heard the opposite with warnings to never leave your dahlias underground. Should i take the risk in leaving them underground?

I keep them in the ground in zone 8b and last winter ( the coldest in 40 years ) it hit minus 10 and I lost non of my dahlias , wet is more of a problem here and cold , if to wet the tubers rot, yo need to add a thick layer of mulch and I plant them a little deeper than most people 6+ inches

Thanks i will make sure to put a thick layer of mulch down before tthe first frost.
