You could do so much with a blank space like this - have you thought about an old, rustic shelving unit? Or how about some reclaimed products - a freestanding mirror, an old door?(see below)

If you've got plenty of space, I would move the cupboard and plug in heater somewhere else, go with the console idea and put a massive mirror above it to bounce the light from the windows around the room. I've done the same in my sitting room ...

I think a console would look best on its own in the middle of that wall. Then add a big mirror, couple of lamps and add a couple of small pieces of art on the walls.

Thank you for your comment Nike. At the moment the room is as in the pics below. It's difficult to move the bookcase because we need it and as there is not a lot of space this is the best place for it. We did have it over by the door for years but since redecorating decided to move it. We will be getting new lights and seat pads. I also need to accessorise it, any ideas welcome. I really like the picture that you sent with your post.

How much room do you have on the wall where the rad is? Is that where you have an internal door into the Conservatory? If it is and if there's enough clearance, perhaps you could have a narrow console made by a chippy to disguise it and provide you with a countertop for a beautiful orchid or something to provide a SPLASH of colour (I was working with a fairly tight space in my Dining Room, but managed to squuueeeze a faux fire surround in - see below) and then you could put a nice, big statement mirror above it? Also, have you thought of painting your furniture and perhaps upholstering the seats?

I know you said you originally had the unit by the door, but did you try setting it at an angle? If there's room, that might look quite nice and then you'd have a blank canvas over the other side of the room

Also, how old is your house? If it didn't look too much out of keeping, you could mock up some faux panelling on the walls using beading/moulding and that would look nice, especially if you used subtle colour changes when you painted it. I would also think of getting rid of the ceiling light and have wall lights instead

Last but not least (then I'll leave you in peace!!), I don't know where you live but do you have a branch of 'HomeSense' near you? If you're a lover of all things 'TKMaxx' then it could be right up your street ... some unusual bits and pieces for the house at very reasonable prices that look like they cost a million $'s, but won't break the bank! The mirror in the photo was from there and cost me £11.99!

Another update Niki, I like the idea of a thin console to cover the radiator but unfortunately it is close to the door that opens onto the living room. We previously had the bookcase next to the radiator. We wouldnt have enough space to put the bookcase on an angle. we may becable to have the radiator moved so that is is more central. yes the ceiling lights will go as will the oil heator. The ornaments will be thinned out ont on thd bookcase. I have posted some pics of where the radiator is situated and where the book case used to be. Thank you again for your great ideas.

The first one is more appropriate for shabby chic IMO. I do agree with mrsmcee re placing of the console table. Did you not like the bookcase where it was previously?

Like all of the mirrors you have chosen, try and imagine the natural wood mirrors landscape rather tha n portrait, if there is sufficient as these would widen the room and reflect more light into that space, if too large either of the other mirrors would work with either 2 lamps, one either side or 1 lamp plus plant or that lovely sculpture on top of your bookcase. The reason I have suggested lamps is for soft light evening dining

the first one would only really work if centred on the wall, and as you have the bookcase there, i think it would look squeezed in. I link the wooden ones, the circular one looks too 'new' for your shabby chic look, like it is trying really hard to look shabby, but it doesn't
