I was going to ask why you needed heat for refrigerator jam, then remembered that you have to boil the pectin.

Doing it in a microwave does cut down on the time. That's a big problem when jammin' ( or jellyin') with a group of seven kids--what to do with them while you all wait for the jelly to come to a boil. Because you have to both entertain the kids and make sure the jelly doesn't burn or boil over. You need an assistant. There's only so long that kids want to watch a pot boil. Same with making bread en masse, what to do while it rises . . . and rises. I have done these things with groups of kids in my younger days . . . alone. But that was back in the day when it was OK to let kids just "play" (i.e. "goof around") for a while, unstructured and nominally supervised. It's sad how much kids long for such opportunities nowdays.
