Fusarium Wilt Really Bad. What About Next Year?

I am growing about 50 tomato plants. This year, for some reason, I have had to pull about 10 of them because of fusarium wilt. At least that is my educated guess. In my 7 years growing at this location, I have only had one or two cases of wilt. I replaced them. I have always wanted to grow a fall crop of tomatoes, so I suppose there is a positive to having to pull the plants. My question is, does this increase the chances that I will have it bad again next year? I can not rotate the crops. I don't want to solarize the garden because it would mean missing out on next years crop.

What are my options to reduce the risk for next year's crop?

    Agree that using the resistant varieties, especially those with resistance to all three types, is your best defense since you can't rotate. Unfortunately those choices are limited, difficult to get, and have iffy quality in some respects.

    But since the fungus overwinters and survives for many years in the soil as spores and on the outer surface of other plants like nearby weeds and other crops, a massive cleaning of the area around the garden also helps. No personal experience with doing this but I have read recommendations for close, widespread mowing of the area followed up with a widespread fungicide treatment of the area.

    Next best approach is 'diluting' the soil contamination by incorporating lots of fresh ingredients, especially fresh, highly active, multi-component compost. Even if it means you have to remove and dispose of some of the current contaminated soil. Not only does it have the effect of diluting the contamination but the beneficial bacteria in the compost can destroy some of the fungus. I have personally had good results with this approach as well as from applications of beneficial nematodes to eliminate the pathogenic nematodes that contribute to the disease's ability to infect plants.

    It just depends on how aggressive you want to get and how much $$ you want to spend. Good luck.

    I would also recommend mulching ( fabric or straw ) and fungicide ( copper, if you go organic - Daconil, if you don't. )

    Spray fungicide REGULARLY (I do it weekly; some here do it every 10 days, or even 2 weeks), from DAY ONE (some here start spraying even a few days BEFORE transplanting the seedlings.)

    Problem with FW and VW are vascular diseases. They are internal to the plant, in the soil and then inside the plant. So fungicides have no contact with the fungus. They enter through the roots and infect the plant's circulatory system so fungicide spray for the wilts is generally regarded as pointless.

    Here - Fungus Diseases and Treatments - they recommend against Fusarium Wilts to use these Non-systemic
    Fungicides: Bordeaux Mixture (copper sulfate and hydrated
    lime), Captan, Chlorothalonil (Daconil), Copper Sulfate, Mancozeb, Maneb...

    They also have suggestions for Organic
    Treatment: Sulfur, Lime Sulfur or Wettable Sulfur, Lime
    Sulfur or Wettable Sulfur, Dormant oil and Lime Sulfur mix, Baking Soda Spray, Milk.

    I had one particular spot that was affected by FW...I pulled out the tomato plant and put a potted one in its place. Not ideal, but I didn't want an empty space in a prime growing area.

    I agree Daniel, but would like to clarify that the OP's question is specifically for preventing future outbreaks of Fusarium. Spraying with either Daconil or cooper-based fungicides won't have any effect on Fusarium a fungus, that's soil-borne and enters systemically (generally through the roots). These fungicides are basically disinfectants for superficial pathogens (random settling, traveling airborne bad fungal spores).

    Yes, and to add to what digdirt said, in your situation, I would do my best to make lemonade from the lemons. By that, I mean I would start studying up on organic preparation for your plot and fertilization methods which are known to reduce the incidence of Fusarium. One thing to avoid next time is a high nitrogen feed for the plants. That's the main benefit I feel offered by organic fertilizers, they promote lots of competing organisms which crowd out any one pathogen, and keep nitrogen levels lower than readily available commercial fertilizers.

    A decidedly non-organic approach: Anecdotal evidence of using fairly concentrated bleach drenches of the soil is out there, and while this alarms many people, it probably is only a small risk of salting the soil, but a cheap treatment.

    I would suggest, if your don't get Fusarium tolerant varieties, that you take up grafting as the simplest way not to rock the OP boat. Most rootstocks are Fusarium resistant, but check confirm it is F0,F1,F2, and others of interest.

    The other option is to put a sheet of plastic over the garden and let it solarize and rest all season, and so you don't miss out, put contaners on top with new soil mixes that you can later recycle elsewhere

    Daniel - I didn't say you wouldn't find some sites out there that say to use fungicides. Consider the relative quality of the two sources you linked - Our Garden Gang and eHow.

    I just said that it is generally regarded as pointless. That is from research based sources like university extension services and scientific articles. They mostly agree they serve little to no purpose since they have no direct contact with the fungus infection as it is internalized and shielded from any sprays.

    Which makes sense if you think about the fact that fungicides are not considered a cure even for foliar diseases where direct contact with the spores is possible and that they are also seed-borne, not air-borne, diseases and the fungicide would have no contact with the seeds either.

    Since plants infected with the various wilts are normally pulled as soon as diagnosed to limit the soil contamination, I'd go that route rather than leaving them in the ground and spraying them. But if you want to use them they sure won't hurt anything.

    Good point on the grafting PC (we were typing at the same time). The vascular wilt diseases were the reason grafting was developed in the first place.

    Yup. That's why pulling the plant ASAP rather than using fungicides on them is the standard recommendation.

    I'm curious, I would think a systemic fungicide like Immunox might actually be at least a little helpful? Though I know many wouldn't want fruit from a plant treated with systemics.

    What is your zone? I don't think fusarium overwinters in the coolest zones... but anyone feel free to correct me on that also. Edit: nevermind, I see you are in NC

    Would it be worth it to do a fungicide drench on the entire plot after the season is over? I could run the fungicide through my drip irrigation.

    And, yes, I pull my plants as soon as I know the wilt is not from lack of water.

    Are we sure that in THIS case is Fusarium Wilt ?

    I'm not saying that ncrealestate, doesn't know what Fusarium Wilt is, I'm just saying that there are a few other diseases that can make leaves... WILT.

    Maybe a picture or two could clarify if it's really Fusarium Wilt.

    I don't think so, and I don't think any fungicide is even legal to do that with which is a different subject. If you use a copper fungicide, it will be stuck in the soil at concentrations that are toxic to growing, not to mention the environment. This is where fumigants are generally used, which are general disinfectants and kill everything. You can call them a fungicide if you want, but that would be confusing. Daconil would not penetrate before losing fungicidal activity.

    Fumigants require a professional licensed person to do and sale is probably restricted to those guys lol no further comment, and red tape, such as logs, follow up measurement, and signs telling your neighbors what's going on, and this is for whatever one or two could be legally applied by the service. There was a pellet one but I can't remember its name or the requirements.

    That's why I suggested bleach as a Hail, Mary, though I think you'd be pretty desperate to consider such a measure. You can look up Actinovate, which is sort of organics on steroids, which you can apply through your drip system before planting, and a few more times if you want. Even though it is a pesticide, it's not one in the conventional sense, since it works by making an aqueous suspension of Streptomyces lydicus strain WYEC 10, a bacterium, that colonizes the roots and produces natural antifungals that are protective and fights Fusarium. Note this is at the beginning of the season due to the mode of action.

    I have heavily contaminated soil, it is what it is. So, I keep track of the soils trials done by UofA and the UCs--they've found that the best solution is to plant nothing at all for a year. No amount of spraying does anything. Growing "resistant" varieties isn't a solution, research indicates that while the plant itself may tolerate the infection, the spores still grow on the roots. Heavily amending the soil does help some, both to dilute & change the texture to be less hospitable to the fungus. But, in their trials, leaving the area completely vacant for 6-12 months provided the lowest infection rate for the next crop.


    I've tried all of the methods suggested and the vacant method works the best. Something dies of wilt on me? I pull it up and ignore the area for a year. So, even though it is late, my suggestion to OP is to get some grow bags or pots and grow in those for a year, even if you have to set them on that same plot, and give the fungus some time to die back. You may have to alternate every other year like this.
