They are not "in" where I live.

My husband and I both grew up with compactors so when we bought our first home it was a no brainer, fast forward 18 years we have our 2nd compactor and now moving to a new home where we will purchase a new one again!

Due to environmental concerns and in some locations (Toronto, Canada for one where we live), they have been banned. The knowledge of its impact has probably decreased consumer demand and therefore wide production. In areas where water and waste sewers are combined, high nitrogen levels create problems when food waste ends up in the water. In addition, they require additional energy and good drinking water to get rid of waste. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful recycling program, which picks up organic waste on a weekly basis and the composte is provided for free to the community. If you have any type of program in your community, it's a good choice to make, as not using a compactor is a really easy habit to lose.

I think you're confusing Trash compactor with Garbage disposal....
