Elephant ear broke off?

Good Day! I have had this Elephant Ear 'Persian Palm' since 2011. It has done well. This year the ears/leaves emerged from a large, tall base. A few days ago this base broke off. It appears to have rotted. It has been very wet here. Its 'gooey' inside. Is there anything I can do to save the top? There is a small leaf growing near the side of the pot so I won't lose it completely. Can I pot up the top part? Should I cut off the part that appears to have rot? When I do that and pot it up, will new roots grow? Thanx for your help. Barbara
