Interesting idea. I have never painted stone but the photo that you found looks intriguing.....However, once you paint the stone, you are going to have to repaint every few years.

I would suggest lightening and brightening the house in every other way possible and keeping the stone as is. It is really a very beautiful material and expensive to replace.

I like the idea of a metal roof in a light color and painting the walls of the house with light color shades of paint. You might also try sandblasting the stone to clean it and lighten it up. You will probably find that it lightens up the stone by several shades.

Once you have done all that you may like what you have......

Well, I have sat and really looked at your house. It is a really lovely house, but seems dated with the current paint. Before you paint the stone, I think I would put on the metal roof and do a light trim color. Then step back and look at it again. At that point I think the color of #4 for the stone would be fabulous. (The brick trim seems to weigh the house down with the stone.)

I agree that you should try everything else before painting the stone! Your home is lovely. A new roof and fresh trim color will be exciting. I think that new landscaping would be great, too. The front is currently " flat"....maybe some nice curvy planting beds?

Yes! But use a stain, it will last longer. We are doing this with our stone.

Interesting question. Although the suggested picture looks nice, try painting over the red first and see how that looks. It might be a nice contrast between the darker stone and white trimmings.

I'm with the others -- leave the stone as is.

I will be different and recommend darker trim and accent colors. The existing colors are rather distracting as the eye doesn't know what to look at.

It's not the stone that needs painting it's the big rectangles of stucco (or whatever) that throw the look off. Of course, your inspiration picture is fabulous but don't know if you can achieve that same look from your starting point.

Could you replace the rectangles with shingles? Just trying to think what would work. Shingles would look much better with the stone.

The stone is the best part. You've got it backwards as to what needs painting.

The house you posted as your inspiration is not Tudor style, it is a Texas hill country house. Here's a second version and another angle on the one you posted. Hill country homes are built with limestone and your home is not going to have the look of that stone even with paint.

Search this site for Tudor homes to see if you can find one to fall in love with. Otherwise, remove all the Tudor details from your home, add more stone all around the windows, and go for a ranch style stone house. Power washing your stone would be a good first step.

Decoenthusiaste is right, your stone will not look like limestone if you paint it. power washing could brighten it and painting the timber dark brown or even black like magpie Tudors in England would make the stone look lighter in contrast. if you are going for a more ranch than Tudor look replace the stucco with board and batten or wood plank . be sure to add a Texas lone star in the gable ;-) seriously I would darker the Tudor timber in and just power wash the stones. brighten with silver leafed plants and bright flowers.

Don't paint the stone.

I'm no expert, but I have never seen a rancher Tudor before. I think you have a ranch style house with Tudor flourish. I would take down the little curls at the tops of the posts and the Tudor details off ( above porch area). The square box designs around the windows kind of make me think of frank L. wright. I would lean toward bringing that style out rather than Tudor. Do a search of frank L. Wright ( lots of natural colours that go with your stone) and ranch style.
You have a nice house it just needs an appropriate style for the form.
