Insect eggs, feces or spores?

Something has been munching on my zinnias, (besides leafhoppers, grasshoppers etc.) but this is the only one of the bunch to exibit tiny black pellets. And, as seen in the photo, the top portion has been chewed and sucked dry. Any ideas?

    if i saw that.. i would look for the caterpillar hiding in the leaves up top ... but i dont see any chewed leaves... hmmmm
