Mirrors over each nightstand with black or white frames. Artwork over the headboard repeating the room colors.

Also maybe a rug at the foot of the bed, white with the red orange or Aqua or both.

Ritting28, what would you think of a canvas of the Golden Gate Bridge above the bed? The red orange should match and San Francisco is one of our favorite cities.

I like the suggestion given already but I think you should update bedding also to something that looks sleeker, less distracting, then use crisp white sheets and pillowcases. Something like this grey one in the photo would look great.

A large grasscloth rug would be a great start!

Unfortunately we just bought the bedding so I won't be able to replace it for a while.

I like the idea of a grasscloth rug because we have two dogs that shed nonstop but I'm worried it'll make the bedroom look too nautical for our style. Is this something you would recommend Miranda/Dana?

The furniture is this room is awesome, but the bedding is very distracting. I like the idea of folding down the bedding so that you see less of it and add crisp white sheets and some tailored accent pillows. The coral lamp on the red night stand is a "miss". I think you should have larger matching, glam lamps on both sides of the bed, maybe something metallic or crystal, the black shade works as would white (nothing too traditional though). A symmetrical arrangement of art over the bed; perhaps some modern watery ocean images that have had the color manipulated. Pull the sheepskin rug out from under the settee. Don't put sisal in this room! Since the furniture is a bigger investment than the bedding the rug should relate to those elements. For now a shaggy solid white or pale gray rug would work with the current bedding and would give the warmth and texture you're looking for. Love the concept of this room, but I think the beachy coastal touches aren't quite right.

That rug choice would work. Pottery barn also has great natural looking grasscloth rugs!

Thanks Dorene. I'll try just going without lamps on the nightstands. We never use them and they take up a lot of space. I like the idea of putting mirrors on the wall above each nightstand. I've moved the rug much further out from under the settee and it does look better. Thank you! I do agree that we need accent pillows badly. I hate the pillows we have right now which is why I have the comforter pulled up so high to hide them...lol

Window panels on place where you see wall. One narrow panel take a color from bedding. Might try back. Then remove fur rug from red piece. Add a coral 5x8 rug at foot of bed. Try shag. Try 3 pictures going across headboard 4" above headboard. They have nice ones in black frames, with pic of red coral. Approx 18x 20 with 2" between.

The settee looks totally uncomfortable - like something from a museum that really isn't to be sat on. I would replace it with something that invites you to sit, lean back, lounge and relax. I'm not impressed with the bedding and lamp - might expect that spread in a child's room. Ground the bed with a large rug pulled under the first 1/3 go 1/2 of it, mirrors over the tables, and wall lamps above the headboard if you discover you can use them would be a nice look. Painting the wall behind the bed in an accent color from a piece of art you love would work.

Here's inspiration for future reference when you can replace the spread. Since it is a bit on the juvenile side, you might easily sell it on Craig's List and move in another direction for your bedroom.

Your bedroom is almost perfect. Instead of a rug, move the sheepskin out from under the settee and put it next to the bed; get a second sheepskin for the other side.

The lamp is wrong. You need two of these:

You might consider a hanging basket from a bracket centered over the center window -- but only if there is solid wall above the window to support the weight, perhaps with some English ivy. Put the red seating currently in the window at the foot of the bed or elsewhere and add a black leather executive chair that reclines and a modern styled narrow (magazine?) table at the window -- a place to read with natural light.

It looks as if you have a table on one side of the bed and a trunk on the other that are color coordinated but only one lamp for light. If you replaced those two pieces with floor lamps (chrome or stainless and black) with a built in shelf at about bed (top of the mattress) height (usually have another "shelf" as a base for balance/stability), then you'd have lighting without clutter and with two purchases instead of four -- and you could always use the table and/or trunk you now have beside the chair you put at the window.

A room sized rug would shrink the feel of the room and be a dust magnet, too.

I wouldn't clutter the wall above the headboard either unless you specifically have something you want to display.

I wouldn't clutter the windows with drapes or curtains either -- it will darken and visually shrink the size of the room. If the windows feel naked to you, perhaps consider sheers.

MCM hanging pendants would look neat if you can get an electric source for them--don't run wires down the walls. If not, stick with matched lamps on either side of the bed--the symmetry works well in this room, but it will be a trick to keep them in scale with the bed without overpowering the nightstands. That's why something transparent or reflective would be nice.

In the photo above that Marlene posted note how the pillows on the left are stacked--that would look nice and would be inexpensive (just nice crisp bed linens), don't include the arrangement they show on the right, it's a display arrangement--do both the same and accent the bed pillows with a small lumbar pillow in perhaps a shiny gray silk with texture texture or something a touch of red. I love this room, especially the red Marshmallow sofa and hope you'll show us updates as you progress.

p.s. If the Golden Gate Bridge artwork mentioned earlier is the right shape and scale for over the bed it sounds neat. It needs to be a big bold rectangle to hold it's own with the bed.

I haven't had time to do much but I just wanted to show the few changes I've made. I pulled the sheepskin rug most of the way out from under the sofa. I also took decoentusiaste's recommendation to heart and tried to make the sofa look more approachable by arranging some books+magazines around it. Let me know if it looks better!

For the bed I pulled back the duvet and let the white pillows show (only have two right now but I do like the stacked look of the pillows in Marlene's photo). This time I made sure to get a shot of the ceiling fan in the photo.

I would like to add these mirrors above the nightstands. Any thoughts?

Nothing wrong with red lamp, but to me seemed too much red [red on red table etc...]. That mirror has no fussy detail and offers a textured/ aged? look, nice to change up from uniform upholstery which window seat seems. I don't know that it's bad...

Ivan, you might be so creative! - have you repeated the tentacles on your bed creature in the circles of the seating? :)

You can spray paint the base of the lamp white, it needs to be changed. Seems like it clashes with the table. Artwork above bed, and a rug too are all great suggestions. I would bring in some of the green color that is on the bedspread, which I love btw.

Painting the wall behind the bed ar dark great would fir the room great, after my oppinion. Adding a mirror above the bed and some mathing lamps would make the room more coheisive. I would also remove the carpet underneith the small sofa. A bedspred is also nesesary, I would pick a silk black and then add some red pillows.

What size are the mirrors? And your nightstands? I think they will look great if the size is right. and the pendant lighting similar to what groveraxle recommended would look great with them also.

Here's another update since I've had time to do some shopping haha. Hopefully it's an improvement, I think it looks more complete now. I agree that pendant lights would look amazing but unfortunately we don't have attic access there to make it an easy job.

But in terms of the recent update, we often repeat the recommendation that you place the rug in-front of the bed, rather than under. Although this isn't a big deal, some people seem to really insist that is is one of the "rug rules". Although the rug you currently have is fine, you could go a little brighter/older and really hit those blue and teal accents you have going on. By the way, you have a great room going on already!
