Rose midge.

I thought I would revive this post at this time because those who live in Rose Midge Fly country are already seeing, this time in May, signs of the damage the maggots of this incredibly devastating fly inflict.

The photos above are classic damage. In the most severe cases an entire rose garden can produce NO blooms all season long after the first flush of undamaged blooms in the spring. Sometimes there is even spotty damage here and there on the first spring blooms (or should I say, lack of them), but generation after generation of the midge in the garden quickly goes to work wrecking immense havoc.
