Room looks really great!! I would like to paint the door in dark brown like on photo below

I would paint the top part of the wall darker. I would change the rug and the 2 blue pillows.

Do you mind trying to switch the 2 diamond pattern pillows with the red ones and the red vase with the one on the trunk? I am not sure how this will look, I am just curious.

I don't think it's anything you have done. The door is fighting with the window causing asymmetry. Creating a faux entry will balance your room.

There are two windows.Drapes on windows can bring balance to space.

One small thing is the trunk (I think it's a trunk?) is too far forward. Try placing it even with the backs of the chairs.

Then pull all three pieces backwards and pull the sofa several inches away from the wall. The fireplace is too far to the left in the arrangement - like you moved the chairs and trunk inward to clean the floor under them or something. Very nice room and furnishings!

Lastly, the colors in the rug are more earthy and do not coordinate with the crisper colors in the rest of the room.

If I were to be picky I think it's your rug choice- too muted. However I said picky, because the room looks fine.

I like how you balance the orange accents in the room.
I would remove the navy pillows from the sofa..too many pillows there. The trunk seems a bit large for the area and for those chairs..Maybe if you move it a bit towards the back like it was suggested, maybe that works..

I'm nitpicking. I would like to see a lamp of some kind, the mirror be just a tad smaller and something that is a little scruffy and not perfect.

Changing the rug and hanging drapes would make a big difference. Any chance the couch could face the fireplace with the chairs flanking the fireplace?

Could the mirror be replaced with art? Also, I would remove all objects from fireplace mantle. Finally, the small table would look better between the chairs than the trunk does, I think.

Overall, it is lovely. I would remove small items from mantle. I would not paint the door; it looks so fresh as it is. I would consider a different rug.

The room is lovely. If it were up to me I would remove the rug just to see what happens. Instead put the navy pillows on accent chairs and put Orange pillows on the couch. The mantle I would leave the mirror and candle holders and remove the orange vases. I'm currently struggling with accents for my living room as well.

Nice room but I would make a few changes. Looking at the original pic, I'd move everything to the left so when standing directly in front of the fireplace, the coffee table is exactly centered on it, with each side of the furniture 18" from the table. I'd place the round side table between the two chairs and try the trunk next to the sofa, with a good size lamp on it. The trunk may be too big for the room, but I'd try it next to the sofa. I do think it's too big to go between the chairs.

Would you ever consider placing a chair on each side of the fireplace and having the couch face them that way? I realize there is a door there, but would there still be room for a chair, if it were pulled forward a bit?

If yes, then new pics could be posted and we could go from there with decor and pics and the mirror.

celerygirl, I love that room! This space is open to kitchen, dining room, etc. Would I need to paint all doors to match?

It looks like yours!! Some little changes you can make looking at this room.I think you have to paint all...doors to match.

I would love to have the couch facing the fireplace, but this is a split foyer house and walking up the steps all you would see is the back of the couch . I tried it and it blocked the view and the light.

Nice space, but I think the rug should be replaced.

I agree with others that this is a lovely room and you've made some nice furniture choices which do look better now that they're centered on the fireplace. I actually like the neutrality of the rug for this small space. What bothers me, and this is nit-picky, but sometimes it's the nit-picky details that can make or break a room, is that there doesn't seem to be a reason for the orange accents other than a random pop of color. If you replace the rug you could initiate the orange there (or another color if the orange is to go). If the rug is staying, I'd suggest a replacing the round mirror with a piece of art that brings in the accent color. Also, I think the solid color orange pillows and the solid white throw on the solid brown couch don't work. I didn't like the white/diamond pattern pillow on the couch either. These elements would work better if they had a pattern with a mix of the neutrals in the space and your accent color(s). There are too many white candles between those on the mantel and the cocktail table. The shapes on the mantel are too vertically balanced--try something horizontal, it doesn't have to be a solid mass it could be something small that repeats, there is a similar problem with the cocktail table arrangement. The chest between the chairs is a bit over-sized, but is an interesting piece and does balance the mass of the brown couch. Lastly, don't paint the door different than the windows that would call more attention to the asymmetry on that wall. Windows treatments are another way to bring in warmth, color and texture, but I like the clean lines the space has without them, if anything I'd recommend uncomplicated roman shades.

I like the changes you made!!! I think I would center the mirror over the fireplace and fix the sticks in the orange vase and enjoy the room.

Just looked again.....can you switch the trunk with the round table at the end of the couch? I think if the chairs and the couch can be close to the same size....and facing each other instead of the one being off centered from the couch, it might feel better, too.

I like the changes. The thing that jumps out is the mirror...it seems a bit too big for that area..I would rather have a piece of art there, but that's just me. As for the trunk, if you need to for storage, keep it. If you don't, then I would use something smaller in between those armchairs. You have a beautiful room there.

I agree about trying the round side table and trunk switched. Maybe you've already tried that and didn't like it? I don't think the trunk is terrible between the chairs but it's a little too big and it would look better if the chair combo length and sofa length were close to the same.

If the big red vase stays between the chairs, I'd remove the sticks. They're a little tall and distracting in that location.

In this new pic, it kind of looks like there is another piece of furniture facing the fireplace, just outside the picture - is there?

Oh, I forgot, please center that mirror, though I do like the mirror there.

Your room has great bones and love the color selection! Have you thought of switching the chairs and sofa arrangement, with the chest under the art. Place the large red vase on the chest then. Maybe remove the red vases under the mirror for a less busy look. Make the sofa cleaner with just a couple pics and throw with less contrast-- not stark white against the dark...

Your space is beautiful. I actually love the rug and would not even think of changing it. I like that it has muted and subtle colors allowing the other elements in the room to stand out. The rug also ties in beautifully with the subtle colors in your art. Great paint color. Do love Lucidos renderings of the screen placed in front of the door. Not sure if you have the space to do something like that. Also like the idea of painting door darker or staining it as suggested by celerygirl. Perhaps, black? Wouldn't change another thing!

Your changes look great! The color in the rug looks different in the second picture - a better match, if that is closer to the actual color. How do you feel about the room now?

I like the changes too. If you are going to keep the orange, I would change the art to have a bit of the orange in there and maybe remove the orange accent on the fireplace. Personally, I would change the orange accents for the light blue you have in your current art but this is a personal choice.

Somehow, I don't know why. your room looks calmer and I think it is because your eyes don't jump everywhere with the orange too much spread. I think having the orange on the sofa instead of the chairs, makes the eyes not jumping as much.

I agree that the trunk is a bit too big but it still works when it is moved backward like you just did.

Also, I find the mirror a bit big for the space and I see that you have a chandelier facing it but it seems that the mirror does not reflect it. It looks like it is reflecting the ceiling instead, which is not a particularly decorative accent. If it is the case, I would replace it for another art. Do you have another place in the house you can move your mirror?

If it is in the budget, I would replace your current art for a mirror. It seems that it would reflect the dining room.

I also like the rug in the color of your last picture.

Changes work well and make a good space even better. Have you considered sconces on the bare wall between the door and the window -- but only if you find some you actually like -- don't put them there as a space filler. Great, comfortable looking space.

If the art had some of your accent color it would pull it all together. Art is blending in with the wall color.

Love your round mirror, but it isn't working at the FP. Whatever you put there needs to fit between the trim at the top and bottom and be no wider than the firebox opening. Besides that, the mirror is only reflecting the ceiling - not anything beautiful or interesting. I almost wish it were wired for electric sconce lamps, but you might try some large candle sconces on there. You could DIY some using found items and battery operated candles. Is there a chandelier in the dining area that the mirror could reflect? I guess above the sofa it would just double the kitchen. IMO, orange is not the accent color for this room - a bit too Halloween with the black sofa. I would opt for the blue from your big art piece. I'm not a fan of sticks as decor and the plant by the window also has a stick look to it, adding sharp angularity that isn't working for you. If you want a live plant, find one that has a softer profile. I'd rather see empty urns/vases than ones with sticks. As for the rug, I like it a lot, but it seems way too casual with the formal wainscot and FP trim. You can still use a geometric pattern, but a more formal one. Lumbar pillows in the chairs would bring that color up to eye level.

I agree with someone that the room would benefit from some lamps.

And some drapes, ecru silk or linen perhaps?

The plant in the corner could be replaced with a larger leafy tree type. Even a palm would work. Plants make a room homey and cozy.

I really like the room but the orange seems too bright for the rest of what is going on. I would go with more earthy colors for accessories so that it doesn't all clash with the rug. I would stick with the camel, brown look and add just a spot of color - maybe some orange flowers in a vase and a book on the coffee table with an orange cover. Here are some ideas for you to consider:

Art on wall by door

You need a rectangular cocktail table to repeat the shapes in the rug, window and door. Repeating the shape will make the rug less assertive (which seemed to stand out by others as well) . Place the round table between the chairs. The mirror is too large and add some pillows with another pattern.

I agree with another poster that having the door and window flank the fireplace results in asymmetry. Is there any way you can move the door somewhere else and install a matching window in its place? I believe your colors are great, but I do believe a fancy, wide, carved, and white-painted frame around the painting would help it make much more of a statement in this room. Also, some red-orange and white print throw pillows on the sofa will tie in with the other red-orange accents.
